Midgets continue Andeorson, 4th solid play WhitbY's nidget AA, hockey teamn continued its winxung streak during the past week With three victories, scoring 21 goals and onlY aiiowing two short- handed goals. Evan Kitamnura was in net for a 3-1 victory over Barrie and an 8-0 shutout over Clarington, while Rich Sanders goaltended for a 10- 1 thumping of Markham. The Barrie victory was sweet revenge, since Whitby lost 4-3 in their previous game when Barrie timed out the gamne with over four minutes remnaining and Whitby came on strong, rebouncling from a 4-1 deficit. Not only did the strong defensive squad of Ryan MeLeod, Ryan Clumpus, Ryan Leacocke, Don Campbell, Paul Matusiak, Evan Cardwell and Daniel Bescoe hold off the opposition, but they contributed four goals -- two by Peacocke and singles by Cardwell and McLeod. The forwards were flying, scoring the other 17 goals. Guest player Bobby Schiitt scored two and Brant Flaherty had a hat trick against larington. Assisted by Derek Ackford, Mike Feret and Mike Majeste, the other scorers were Tim Fennessey (five), Brion Hendry (three), Jay Schleiffer (two), Paul Ellis (two) and John Coleman. Cardwell again top Bronco Justin Cardweli of Whitby recently earned his second player of the week re ogition for the Western Mice igan University hockey team. Cardweli scored twice in a 4-2 win over the University of Alaska Fair- banks and had two assista in a 5-3 loss te the same team. Cardweii later scored two «oals in a 3-2 win over Ferris State. The senior at Western Michigan has Il goals and seven assista in 10u games to iead Broncos in scoring. Nine of the il1gals by pound ieft Winger have ..o corne on the power play. "Justin la doîng a fine job of what has been expected of him as far as on-ice accomplishments " says Broncos coach BillIWilkin- son. The Anderson CVI senior boys' voileybail team had its worst tournament per- formance of the season over the weekend. Unfortunately for the team, it came in the biggest tournainent of ail -- the f rovincial high sehool Anderson finished fourth flot a bad finish, but stili disappointing for a team that had iost just once this season and badly wanted a medai in the finals. Anderson tasted defeat against a less skiiled opponent i the round- robin but scrarnbied back to reach the semi-finals in which they lost, 15-8, 15-7, to Forest Heights of Kit- chener, who wouid go on to win the Ontario champion- ship. F'orest Heights defeated favoured Oakridge of Lon- don, who had been unbea- ten this season, in the final. And i the bronze medai match, Anderson again lost to a iess skilied team, Crestwood of Peterborough, 15-12, 16-14. Anderson had defeated Crestwood earlier in the tournament. «We were s ' lin g the whole ween2" sy Anderson CVI coach Gord Williamson of his team that had iost only once this sea- son entering the tourna- 2. Victories over Crestwood and Waterloo sent Ander- son to, the quarter-finals against Barton of Hamil- ton. That wouid prove te be Anderson's best game,- says Williamson, but victory Was costly. Nat Ovsenek, who had ben one of the teazn's best players in the tourna- ment, injued his back and was unable te play another game. Wiiiiamson says some of the other starting players for his team just didn't piay te their potential as they had in previous teurnainent __ "Our best players weren't our best players." But Williaznson saiys next season's team, will be as strong or stronger than this year's version, as only a few players, Ryaýn Flesche, Tgr Arges and perhaps Mark Swain, won't h baèk whiie the' other strong teams will lose almost ail their top players.
