Rentai vacancy rate increases again Improved homeownership affordability ha. shifted niany rentai households into homebuying mode in the Whitby-Oshawa area, according to a report by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Sinking mortgage rates have equallzed the cost between owning and renting for many area renter., says the CMHC. As a consequenoe, the vacancy rate for the areas increased for the second year in a row. The vacancy rate rose to 3.7 per cent In October 1996, up a full percentage point from the 2.7 per cent in October 1995. The average rent Increase was well. within the rent review guideline of 2.8 per oent for ail bedroom sizes. For example, the two- bedroom rent increased by 1.6 per cent to $700. The rentai market survey was conducted during the first two weeks of October.
