Xmas seals in trouble Although Christmas is over, the Lung Association is still trying to reach its $85,000 Christmas Seal Campaign objective. With just weeks to go before the January 31st close-off, total receipts now stand at $74,645. "Unfortunately, our last Campaign weeks are usually slow," says Angela Tibbles, executive director of Durham Region Lung Association. "Once Christ- mas is over, people forget all about Christmas Seals, and in past years contributions during these final weeks have seldom raised more than $4,000." Campaign organisers estimate that over 5,000 people who supported the 1978 Campaign have not yet responded this year. Suggested causes for this range from local lay-offs, to the recent budget and even to the unseasonably warm weather. "Whatever the reesons," says Tibbles, "the fact remains that without at least the $85,000, our services and programs will have to be cut back". High on the cutback list is the annual two week'Sum- mer Camp for asthmatic children at Camp Samac, and also direct assistance for chest patients in finan- cial need. Research allocations will also suffer. Tibbles says this is a final appeal to the public "par- ticularly to those who usually support us" to send in their contribution and help keep all Lung Association programs going. "Few people realize the urgent need to keep working against lung disease" she says, "although it remains the fastest growing health threat to Canadians of all ages. And we're not just talking about smoking - oc- cupational lung diseases, asthma and pollution are all increasing rapidly". Baker said that the budget was an instrumental part of the Tories plan of action. "The budget contained the essential economic ingredients to put this coun- try back on the road to prosperity by confronting rather than ignoring the challenges ahead," he said. "Our energy policy would decrease our dependance on foreign supplies by making the production of tar sand and frontier oil economically viable. We were preparing to allocate the research and develop- ment the large amounts (of money) necessary to develop alternate energy sources and make them available at a reasonable cost." He claimed that the government was defeated not because they were breaking promises but that they were keeping them. "We were defeated, not because we hadn't kept our promises, but because we were keeping them and beginning the building of a record of achievement," he said. "In fact, we were keeping promise after promise." Baker admitted that the proposal to move the Canadian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem was a mistake. "We have admitted it waw wrong," he said. "But was it as mischievous, I wonder, as Trudeau's embrace of Russia as a counterbalance to the influence of the U.S. in Canadian foreign policy?" Baker also accused Trudeau of "cosying up" to Cuban dictator Fidel Castro and of reducing national security through the reduc- tion of the Canadian com- mittment to NATO. The liberals also carried out a "scortched earth policy" when they left office making the Tories job even harder Baker said. "Government doesn't run on overnight miracles. In seven months you have the right to expect an energetie beginning - not the total fulfillment of a long-term program," he said. "To return Trudeau to power, with or without his old coalition with the NDP, would be disastrous for Canada. In the wake of profligate administration though decisions have to be taken and careful repair work has to be done to the economy," he said. Baker said that the job of government is serious and that he wouldn't trust Trudeau to carry out that responsibility again.
