Crouch also said that the service responded to 835 cails during the year, up fromn 703 in 1978. In terms of dollars, damage is up by $77,115 over 1978 although it is well be.low a live year average of $319,054. The greatest nuniber of cails came in April with 99 followed by July (83) and January (80). Crouch said that the high number of caîls during the winter months of January and April is due to the in- creased use of furnaces, wood stoves and chimneys as everyone is home. Incidents of fire are for- mally lowere in the surner months because everyone is away lrom home and these devices are not in as great a use. Fire Hall No. 3 at 201 Brock Street South respon- ded to the greatest numnber of cails, 416, lollowed by Hall No. 2 on Thickson Road with 316. The lire department eru- ploys 96 persons on both a full-time and part-timne basis. Crouch has asked for four additional fuil-time liremnen. This is "in order to main- tain a minimum of three men per truck stationed at Thicksons Road at ail Urnes, " he said. Crouch said that 160 times last year a truck leIt the station with only two men. This year, the departmnent will acquire a new 1,500 gallon combination water tank truck and pumper for Pire Hall No. l in Brooklin. The department also in- spected 3,200 homes in their home inspection programn in 1279. The area covered was from Dundas Street north to Rossland Road. The 62 members of the part-time division spent a total of 1,646 hours in training which averages out to 26.55 hours per man. However, the 32 memnbers 0f t.he full-time division spent a total of 6,574.25 in tr- aining which averaged out to 205.45 hours per man. Crouch stressed that ail firefighters receive the sanie basic training and are East. The biggest fire of the year was in a storage unit of the Mini Stor-It at 200 Har- bor Street last November 8B. The lire reulted in $55,000 damage and the cause is still undetermined. In ail, there were 22 lires which caused more than $2,M0 in lamage and these represent 85.8 per cent of the overail lire loss. The highest fire loas year was 1976 when total damage in the town was $619,620. That was the year of the major lires at Stokely Van Camp and at the Whltby Psychiatrlc Hospital.
