With 220 of the 2M6 poils reporting Fenneil had received 16,866 votes which compared with Liberal Doug Dickerson's 13,060 and NDP hopeful Geoff Rison"s 1,109. Fenneil received 40.6 per GEOFF RISON cent of the popular vote Di*dn't want PC's to win By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff "I don't give a damn who wins s0 long as the PC's don't," Geoff Rison, the NDP candidate in Ontario Riding said as the election resuits started to pour in on Monday night. Nationaliy, he got hils wish as the Liberals wîll form the next government but iocally he didn't as Scott Fenneli was re-elected to the House of Commons for the Progressive Conservatives. A good fight By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff One candidate in this elec- tion both won and lost on Monday niglit. Doug Dickerson, the Liberal hopeful in Ontario Riding, lost to Progressive Conservative Scott Fennel but on the brigliter side (for him, at least), lis party will forni the next federai gover- nment.* Dickerson praised the winner of this winter eiec- ion saying that "Scott ran a dlean campaign." "He was a gentleman throughout, as he said lie would be. " The Pickering regionai councillor says that he saw the Liberal majority as a clear rejeîction of the Con- servative government's budget and the 18 cent a gallon excise tax. He says that he wiIl return to the municipal forum saying that his is "iooking forward to the municipal election in anot.her seven months ime." 'II have no intention of abandoning municipal politics," he said adding that there was stili a lot of issues to be deait with at the regional level. Dickerson said that he fourn no antl-Trudeau sen- timent in Ontario Riding and did not count this as a factor in the resuits. '1t has been a top fliglit campaign," he said. "There is nothing 1 would change except the votes." Rison said that he was satisfied with the results saying that the NDP had "increased their percentage of the vote substantially. " Early in the evening Rison predicted that there was "no way the PC's are going to get back in. They're falling apart. " However, the Dunharton High Schooi geography teacher did have some unkind words for the Liberals although he believed they had stolen some of their ideas froin the NDP. "Nearly hall aI their platfomm was NDP poicy," he said. "The Liberals have taken on tahe good cquaity of NDP policies. " Bison said that he was mentally and plisyically exhausted froni a "liard, demanding campaign" and that a big factor was the coid weather. He said that he wÎi return to work today and wait for the next campaign. It is expected that Fenneli wiii become the coxfl- munications critic in the Tory opposition as Dave MacDonald, Tory minister of communications, iost his seat in Monday's election. Fenneil had been Mac- Donald's parliamnentary secretary in the iast House. He also said that he could pinpoint the reason for his Win. 1I did agood job and Ihad a media that supported me." "I think that I proved I was a worker. " Fenneli also had praise for his opponents and refered to the campaign as a "hell of a good fight."t "lIt was fought on prin- cipal." Hie also said t.hat he was the only candidate that sent a great deal of the time knocking on doors and talking to the voters. Fenneil abos said that the new Liberal governent oniy had real support in~ Quebec. "The Francophones got the Liberals back in," he said. "We've got to reach the Francophones and tell themn it is a two party country." Fenneil alos said that the Tories will be stronger op- position because they have had the opportunity to side in goverrnent and are now better informed about the workings of government. "It will now be easier for us to embarass the gover- ament, " he said. Fenneil said that there will not be another election for at ieast three to four years and this wiil give the conservatives time to build up support in the Quebec. The big business issues in the next parliament will be energy and the deficit, Fen- neil said. On the deficit Fenneil said that "we've got to pay the bis. We've got to reduce the deficit. " Energy, will however, take up most of the next government's time as Fen- neil predicted that negotiations with Aberta Premier Peter Loughheed will get tougher now that a Liberal has been returned to power. "He (Lougheed) won't give in to Trudeau," he said. Fenneil pointed out that under the British North America Act, resources are REASNABLE PRICES SCOTT FENNELL the jurisdiction of the provinces. He was also somewhat disheartened at the national resuits saying that this was an "18 cent a gallon eiec- tion. " "The Canadian people are going to be shocked at a 20 cent a gallon increase or in- come tax hike," lie said noting that the Liberais nevèr did announce their proposais for paying for energy self-sufficiency. "lWe don't know what they're (the Liberals) are going to do," lie said adding that he hoped the Liberals would be coming out with a solid energy policy. M "6We were elected to be a responsible governhnent and we tried to be a responsible government," Fenneli said. "If we'd been there another six rnonths, we'd have been there for another 20 years. " He also laid part of the blamne for the Tory defeat at the feet of Conservative On- t.ario Premier BiR Davis. "Davis did us a lot of hamm," lie said. "He didn't help us nationaliy. " Fenneil added, however, that he uinderstood both Davis' and Lougheed's position saying that they were both fighting for their respective provinces rights under the BNA act. ou ~lF DRAFTSPERSON DU PONT CANADA INCOR4PORATED, WHITBY WORKS, HAS A REQUIREMENT FOR A DRAUGHTSPERSON WITH INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE IN THE MECHANICAL ANDIOR ELECTRICAL FIELD.
