PAGE 6, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1980. WHITIJY FREE PRESS Cros swa1k study to be done Anyone using a crosswalk should step lively. According to West Ward Councillor Joe Bugelli, pedestrian crosswalks not controlled by traffic lights are not enforceable because Whitby has no signs on the outskirts 0f town warning motorists to be on the look out for them. Whitby lias at least two "zebra" crossing, one at Fairview Lodge and the other on Brock Street North at Manng road. Bugelli said that he wants a study of pedestrian traffic throughout the town to see if the crosswalks are needed and if they prove to be 50 that the proper signs are erected on the roads leading into town. "Wh.at is the sense of having something you can't etiforce and does not mean a-nything?" Bugelli said. "Because drivers don't know where they are, there is a danger of rear-end collisions not to mention danger to pedestrians. " Bugelli indicated that there has already been one pedestrian injured while using the crosswalk near Fairview Lodge. Are the buses conil ng? It should be known sometime this week whether or not there will be a municipal bus service for the Town of Whitby. There was a scheduled meeting of the town's budget committee to consider estimates from several private conipanies. The companies' quotes were to have been submitted to Clerk-Administrator Bill Wallace last Wednesday. Budget discussions have been extended past the deadline to allow ime for the inclugion of a possible bus service. The annual cost to the town to run the service has been estimated at $97,5W0. Fares and provincial sub- sidies will make up the balance of the $180,000 needed to run the system in its fîrst year of operation. Should council adopt a proposai to introduce the service the cost for 1980 will be offset by a $75,000 tran- sfer from a reserve funds of overpayments to the region. Council rejected the idea of a bus service in Septem- ber, however, it was sub- sequently decided to include the issue in the 1980 budget discussions.
