PAGE 14, WEDNESDAy, FEBRUARY 27. 1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS Ashes By THE REV. ANTHONY MEAGHER St. John The Evangelist Church The title of tmis article may sound like the double play com- bination for the Hoboken Homnets. Actually, it is about the value and religious signifîcance of the Ashes of Ash Wed- nesday. A basebali fan, who has no interest in religion, would be advised to quit reading right here. Does receiving the ashies on Ash Wednesday do anything for a person besides giving him a dirty forehead? In aIl honesty, the answer must be "Not necessarily." These branches reniind a Christian of mhe adulation Christ reveived on Hia trlumphal entry into Jerusalem. They are, moreover, a reminder mhat five days later cries of praise had turned to shouts of derision and palm branches to scourges. The crown mistook true power for brute force and rejected a true King, who could change men's hearts by mhe power of love, and opted for "King Caesar" who would oppress mhem, rob them and, eventually, enslave them. "Caesar" produces the same resuits today, yet his power seems ever attractive, whether he wears the mask of atheistie capitalism, communism, or juslt plain individual selfishness. On the drawing boards for many national plans, or corporate policies, or individual life styles, the sword out-perforrns the plowshare and the wisdom of the Cross is foolishness. In real life these plans, policies and life styles are ashes in meernouths of Vietnamese refugees, or broken workers, or despairing farnilies. to geL back to the burned palm branches, their ashes represent mhe results of choosing self over God - the resuits of rejecting Jesus. They signify death. Is there any relief from misery in this article, you may ask. Even religious basebaîl fans may want to stop reading, if the ashes flot only make your forehead dirty, but make the rest of you depressed. Weil, Ashes to Ashes to Life has sorne significance beyond Griffin to Iorg to Mayberry (or Tinkers to Evers to Chance, for you old basebaîl fans.) The ashes of Ash Wednesday, then, remlnd us mhat on this day God begs us to corne to Him, s0 that he can change the emptlness of sin and selfishness, that is part of our lives, into the love and life that he alone, our Creator and Redeemer, can give. To step forward to receive mhe ashes is a physical act of humility, admitting mhat niy life is in need of change - 1, like the publican, arn a sinner. To return to my life, having received mhe ashes, is a promise to struggle during the forty days of Lent to turn away from evil and believe mhe Gospel. To receive mhe blessed ashes is to trust that God will help me to corne back to Him because He is truly my Ioving father. Is is essential to receive mhe ashes? No. Isaiah says "Let your hearts be broken, not your garment.s ton. " Christ would certainly agree with Isaiah mhat mhe repentance in a man's heart is more important mhan any external sign of tmat repen- tance. However, because our humnaness is S0 physical, the Sacramentals can be powerful reminders and grace filled ex- perience of who and what we are, and how deeply we are loved by God in ail the depths and shallows of our hurnanity. The ashes of Ash Wednesday are good for men, if not for angels. Crridor Capers CORRIDOR CAPERS DANCE What can I say: - It was the Best. Our congratulations and thanks to Lynn Majoros and her never-tiring social committee for a truly delightful evening. Lynn's grade three class outdid themselves designing and making the colourful decorations adourning the walls. Del Holliday masterminded a tasty buffet, especially her liver pate and anniversary cake. Our D.J. 's assistant spun the records, allowing Frank TrulI and his wife to join the party. John Buchanan did a superb job of rn.ceeing and kept mhe baIl rolling. Our neighbourhood stores generously donated the many spot dance and door prizes. Thanks go to K-Mart, Woolco, The Mouse Trap, Fabricland, Bernene Sewing Centre, D. & M. Dominion Har- dware, Woolco Mail Fashions, Councillor Gerry Emm, S. R.* K. Gifts, Woolco Mail and domnion Store, K-Mart Plaza. We thank each and everyone of our guests for attending. Many of the people present Saturday evening have not missed one of our Capers Dances. Our hats off to Jean and Howard Allan, who have not only been faithful attenders, but also have filled their table with neighbours. We need more community minded persons like the Allans. We were especially honoured to have our east ward coun- cillor Joe Drunim and his gracions wife Nan, Centre Ward Councillor Barry Evans and his wife, also Margo Ashe and her son Kevin. George Ashe our M.P.P. was out of town on gover- nmernt business, but Margo was able to drop in after attending another area function. Thanks Margo. It was just like old home week to welcome Tom and June Edwards. We miss you Tom (especially your sense of humour and poems). Come back in October. I could mention a lot more wonderful people, but I'd sure to forget someone, however, we welcome Janine and Stew Orland, who have recently located on Kendalwood Road. We hope you will enjoy many more functions with your neigh- bours. Thanks again to the Corridor Ratepayers' Social Commnittee and ahl the executive for a job well done. The iith Corridor Capers will be October 18th, same time, same station. SCOUT PAPER DRIVE The monthly Scout Paper Drive will be held Saturday, Mar- ch il. Keep saving the papers.
