The Book Exchange, located 120 Dundas Street West has stacks upon stacks of used paperback books to be bought or exchanged to keep the avid reader happy in his quest for new or old stories on ail kinds of subjec- ta. The Book Exchange opened in January and is run by Susanna Blackburn, a resident of Port Perry and a book fanatic herseif. Blackburn's shop is limnited for space and so as of yet she bas not gotten into selling hard cover books although she does deal in them in her other store, which is also located in Port Perry. On Sunday February 24, Bell to SUSANNA BLACK BURN takes trade-ins on the books in stock. She selis books for one- hall of their original price and pays one-quarter of the price for trade-ins. Blackburn says that her bîggest problems to date is trying to figure out the reading habits of Whitby people noting that they are different from ber customers in Port Perry. "I'm trying to figure out what the reading habita of the people in Whitby are," she says. She adds that she is not in competition with such established used book dealers as Morgan Self in Oshawa but is attempting to provide a service for people who like to read novels and other forms of fiction although she does deal in some non-fiction. Blackburn also says that ber biggest clientele to date has been, higli school studen- ta. "I've been getting a lot of kids that read," she says. "I can't figure out why this is, " adding that thîs is not the case in Port Perry. The Book Exchange carnies all kinds of books including novels; romances; serres romances; adult books; thrillers; chillers; and killers; as well as children's books. Blackburn says that within the next few weeks she will also add a section of comic books to the store for buying and trading. Equipment is being in- stalled and will be ready for use by April 25, 1980, Neudorf said. The Whitby 666" and "668" exchange has a present capacity of 11,200 main telephones, with nearly 10,000 in use at present. The new capacity will be 13,200. Bell Canada has a capital investment of $12 million in the Whitby exchange and last year paid $210,000 in real estate, business and gross receipts taxes to local municipal authorities, corn- pared to $185,000 in 1978. The increased facilities are needed because of steady residential and business developmnent in the Whitby area. The quality of professionalism which was prevalent in these sessions was proof of the high calibre of the entire Toastmistress organization.
