WH-ITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 27, 1980, PAGE 3 No pay raise ýr.B3ui II's By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Regional councillors will flot receive an increase in their salaries in 1960. Not only dld they deny a raise to themselves but to Regional Chairman Walter Beath as well although they did give hlm a benefit package similiar to those received by senior management staff. These benefits include OHIP, life insurance, a den- tal *plan and long-term disability and accordlng to management committee chairman Councillor Alan Dewer of Oshawa have a total value of between $900 and $1,000 a year. In a recorded vote of 12 to 10 (with eight members ab- sent), it was decided not to give Beath a seven per cent increase in salary. The management commit- tee report on which the original recommendations were based, showed that Durham councillors are the highest paid in the province. A regional councillor receives a salary of $12,980 a year which compares to $7,23o paid to Metro Toronto councillors and the $5,800 paid to Sudbury regional councillors. Excluding Durham, the average salary given to a regional councillor is $8,305 q year. However, council chair- man B3eath is one of the lowest p4id in the province. He receives $35,528 a year. The hlghest paid chair- man la Paul Godfrey of Metro Toronto who receives $53,120 a year and the lowest is the chairinan of Halton Region who receives $27,720 a year. Beath is well below the provincial average (ex- cluding Durham) of $38,046 a year. The report made special note that these salaries for both the chairman and councillors do not include tax exemptions, vehicles, budget allowances and other forms of indirect compen- sation. The report also tabled the salaries paid to the mayors of each of the eight municipalities in the region. Oshawa Mayor Jim Pot- ticary is the highest paid head of council. He receives $26,941 for the city plus his regional. councillor's salary for a total of $39,921 a year. The second highest paid mayor is Whitby's Jim Gar- tshore who in an addition to his councillor's salary received $18,300 a year from the town for a total of $31280 a year. $5,500 a year. Whitby regional couacillor Gerry Emm said that whit- by councillors are flot paid extra for sitting as local committee chairman unlike those of the region or the city of Oshawa.
