According to Jack Mc- Corkell, director of operations for the depar- tment, mhe projeet will cost $3.9 million and will take almost three years to com- plete. "This project will resolve the Port Whitby problem," McCorkell said. He said that the region will caîl for tenders on the project sometime early this year and that construction is expected to start somewhere in late summer or early faîl. When the project is com- pleted three old pumping stations will be taken out of service to be replaced with one new station to be built on Water Street somewhere near Harbor Road. The area has been the bone of contention for many area residents during the past year because of problems with the over- flowing of sewers. Local land owners have also been upset because without this, now approved project, they could develop these lands. The project will be done in two stages, to be con- se<,,utively (provided the region makes the funds available). the first stage wilI see the sewer constructed from the Corbett Creek facility to Dunlop Road. According to McCorkell, this sewer will not lie in ac- tive use until the projeet is finished entirely because it will not service any present dwelling or industry but is needed formte second part. The second part will see the sewer extended from Dunlop Street to the Pringle Creek plant via the Harbor Street Pumping Station, one of the three stations to lie retired after the project is completed. McCorkell also said tmat it is the goal of the project to take the Pringle Creek Water Pollution cont.rol Plant out of action although lie said that would flot be done for several years to corne. the cost of the project, $3.9 million, is to be raised by debenture which will be paid back through the water and sewer user charges Whitby people will pay to the Region. Accordllng to the fact sheet accompaning the budget mhis projeet "will eliminate the existing Harbor Street Pumping Station and provide sanit ary sewer capacity for development in the Port Whitby area. Ser- vice will also be provided for industrial development ad- jacent to the diversion sewer. " McCorkell said that the lands surrounding the projeet are zoned industrial although most of it is owned by DuPont and Lasco. This project wvill allow for themn to expand if they ever want to he said. The region also has to build this projeet to treat backwash water from the Whitby water plant. Back- wash water is the "dirty" water produced after water fromn Lake Ontario had been filtered by the plant. McCorkell said mhat in- stead of installing a treat- ment process in mhe plant it- self, the sewer will deliver the backwash into the sewage treatment system. These conditions had been set down by the Ministry of mhe Environment when the water plant was built. arni - 6 i)iii, Thurs, Fri, Sat 10O amn - 5 pin.
