Broolî Horticultural Society report By MARGARET BEATH BHS Director Civic Beautification received a real boost on February 27 when the Brooklin Horticultural Society held its monthly meeting. The meeting was opened at 8:15 p.m. by President Valerie Hundert and those present sang 'O Canada' ac- companied by Rose Heron on the piano. Alt.hough the weather was very 'unco- operative, thirty-five hardy souls were in attendance. The president welcomed the members as well as visitors from Nestieton and Blackstock and then conduc- ted a brief business meeting. This was followed by a "Paint-mn" under the capable direction of Ken Brown whose horicultural knowledge is qwite exten- sive. Planting trays were distributed to hose present and Ken issued clear and r_ - concise instructions, liberally laced with his own witticisms and the resuits were very gratifying to ail. Fourteen seed flats in al were pianted which will con- tribute greatly towards the civic plantings in spring. Mr. Brown also showed slides on. seed plantings and related subjects. Jack Alian hanked the speaker. Brian Wich of Brookiin, spoke briefly on decorative wooden hanging planters which are for sale by the Junior Achievers. These are a real buy at $500 and the proceeds are for a good cause. They make a great gift, so why not give Brian a cail. Refreshments were ser- ved by Aldine Wick and Bea Lepkey and enjoyed by all.- Be sure to attend our next meeting on March 26 when Georgina Mentis of the Royal Botanical Gardens wiil speak on the subject of "Growing for Showing". Contestants wiil be asked to partake in a speaking com- petition, a group talent routine and a modelling portion. There will be no single talent competition or bathing suit portion to the show. Girls interested in entering may contact Susan Smith at 655- 3932. Contestants must be 16-19 years of age (as of December 31, 1980) and be residents of the Town of Whitby (Ashburn, Brooklin, Myrtle or Whitby). Enter as soon as the fair is only two months away. The week of the Winter Break on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:30 to 3:30 there will be speciai craft programs. Then on Sa turday March 22 there will be movies from 10: 30 to 11:30. The Easter Bunny Draw is in full swing for all of the month of March. Ail you have to do is show your Library Card and take out a book. Your number is then placed in the Bunny Box and a draw will be made for the two chocolate bunnies Satur- day April 5th. Good Luck and Good Reading. See you at the Library. The registration for the next pre-school story hour and mothers group will be taken the week of the 24th of March. The Iast 8 week session will commence April th at 12:30 to 1:30. Children should be at least 3 years old. A limited number of children can be enrolled, so0 register yourself and your ots early. We are endeavoring to introduce the children to music with a rhythm and song and craft hour. BROOKLIN AND DISTRICT KINSMEN SKATEATHON The Brooklin and District Kinsmen Club would like to hank the children who participated in their skateathon on February 13. BROOKLIN AND DISTRICT KINSMEN IIERITAGE DAY The Brooklin and district Kinsmen Club recognized Heritage Day on February 20 by introducing Litery Achievement Awards for the students of Meadowcrest and St. Leo's Schools. The competition and presentation of these awards will be sponsored each year by the Kinsmen Club. These awards wilI be presented for accomplishment in literary achievement. The winners of this year's awards were: Meadowcrest Junior - Claire Taylor; Meadowcrest In-, termediate - Jackie Wiliamson; St. Leo's Junior - Shannon McCabe; St. Leo's Intermediate - Nancy Roche. BROOKLIN BLOCK PARENTS The Brooklij and area Block Parents have been quite pleased with the number of new Block Parents over the past year and certainly welcome any new applicants. To become a Block Parent it is flot necessary to attend any meetings. All you do is display your sign in a window when at home and remove it when unavailable. The Brooklin Block Parent Committee meets every 3rd Monday evening of each month at 8: 00 p. m. If anyone is interested in attending caîl the new Brooklin Area Chairman, Heather Bray at 655-3334.
