WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEI)NESDAY, MARCH 19, 1980. PAGE 5 Air"port landowners get justice -Fennei "A measure of fairness and justice has at last been introduced to the Pickering Airport mess thanks to an order-in-council passed by the Progressive Conser- vative cabinet during the federal election campaign," the newly re-elected PC MP for Ontario Riding said last week. The order, now a regulation under the Finan- cial Administration Act will mean thousands of dollars will be refunded to exprop- priated Pickering ian- downers, Scott Fenneli said. Last fall, the rookie mem- ber of the House of Com- mons had cailed the tax situation in the area "im- moral". According to Fenneli, un- der the iast Liberal gover- nment, taxes were levied on the interest accumulafed by To the Unfit If you just sit You won't quit Bemng unfit. Pickering landowners as a resuit of their land ex- propriation settiement for the once planned Pickering Airport. "The aiready collected taxes will be refunded," Fenneli said. "'Not only was the (iast Liberal) governinent f or- cing these people out of their own homes, but it was taxing them for the priviledge," he said. The tax break will apply not oniy to Pickering but aiso to iandowners ex- propriated for the Mirabel Airport in Quebec. Fenneli also vowed to fight for a similar exemption with regards to captial gains tax. 6"4It is a simple matter of fairness," he said, "I hope the Liberals will now recognize this. Grain tlireshing By EUGENE HENRY First of ail, let me reassure you. The men are not trying to kili a rat on the barn floor, they are threshing grain (wheat probably) with a primitive agricui1tural tool called a flair. This was the way our early settier/farmers threshed grain until about 1850, when the first crude agricultural machines became available to our farmers in central Canada. It is to be noted that the Egyptians threshed their grain in a similiar way 4,000 years ago. The message is perhaps that farm folk have always been conservative people set in their ways and slow to change. They always called this process thrashing and even though no self respec- ting farmer would ever cal it threshing there is no sign yet, that there is any demand to change the speiling of the word. Until the first horse drawn reapers arrived, harvesting grain was a long series of separate back-breaking chores; reaping the grain by sickle or scythe; stocking up the sheaves or bundies of grain; getting the grain into the barn; the threshing process as seen in this illustration by C.W. Jefferys and finally sifting or cleaning the grain called winnowing. If ail of these jobs were done cleanly and well in good, dry, warm weather the grain could be sent to the grist mili for making fine grade, white flour for either baking purposes at home or shipment to Whitby harbour for export to the U.S. market or abroad. If, however, the grain became crushed or dirty it was consigned to the nearest distillery for making booze. While our modern day farmers can use sophisticated agricultural equipment like the combine, they still must compete with the ever changing weather to survive and make a few dollars.
