There are three basic ways for a citizen to receive services: either by visiting personally a government office; by writing for information or assistance; or finally by the telephone. Sn- ce Oie telephone is Oie primary method of communication in Ontario, our customer service program has concentrated first on Ois method. Six major steps have been undertaken by the Governmnent of Ontario to make it easier for citizens to obtain information and services through use of the telephone. The first is to bring together under one section of the phone directory, ail gover- nmént and other public services... .federal, provincial, regional and local. After April 1980, ail directories published in Ontario will have this separate section coloured in blue, and in tirne, at the beginning of this section will be index to major public sec- tor services. The index will use key words which will îdexitify Oie major services provided by ail levels of governnient and public agencies. The provincial government is also improving the mnannier of listing services in telephone directors, by listing in plain language Oie most frequently used key services of the Drntari Governent. These functional listings are now being phased into new directories. Each ministry of Oie provincial gover- nment is in Oie process of providing toll-free access to al citizens throughout Oie province, either throiîgh local offices, Orough regional centres or directly to Queen's Park depen- ding upon Oie demands for Oie different services. As well, at Oie end of each telephone listing of provîincial services, a general inquiry number will be listed to offer in- formation on services not mentioned in the directory. This number will be called Zenith Ontario, or a local equivalent if a D Mir available at: Whnyou bring in a film to be processed & printed at r hnMBM Photography Sizes 110, 126 & 135, AYOUR CHOICE *A 5x7 ENLARGEMENT IN DELUXE FOLDER (coupon) *A DELUXE PHOTO ALBUM (3 coupons) (You rece ive 1 coupon for each roll) WE ONLY USE KODAK PAPER M.B.M. QUALIT PROCESINVG DONE B)' FI M L BWRlI M If Whitby Tow'n Council gives its blessing, the old Faith Baptist Churclh on Brock Street North could become a dinner theatre. Steve Wagner, a irepresen- tative 0f Mary Brock Developments, the owners of the property, while giving no details of the proposed operation said that it is "the coming thing in entertain- ment and there is not rnuch in the town in the way of en- tertainmnent. " The congregatioli of the church moved out last year and are building a new chur- ch north of Taunton Road, "A- dinner theatre is something this town didn't have before," Wagner said at last week's ad- long distance caîl is not involved. To respond to Zenith Ontario inquiries, we must ensure that referrals are made to the ap- propriate ministry and this will be accomplished through a computerized data base. The person ariswering the Zenith On- tario inquiry will have this database available to, make a quick referral to the right pers on who cari actually provide the in- formation or assistance the caller is seeking. Fianlly, improving information about government services and making it easier for the public to contact the governent wiil have accomplished nothing if the civil servants are flot trained, informed and properly motivated to provide these services. Consequently the last initiative is one of the most important parts of the whole program,...,to develop customer service training programs for ail civil servants. Every ministry of t.he Ontario goverrnent is participating in the government services program, and it is hoped it will be fully operational by the end of 1980. Obviously, since much of the success of the program depends upon the attitudes of the people involved, time will be required to allow the civil service to becomne familiar with Oie goals and objectives of the program, and to react in a mature manner. The Government of Ontario is committed strongly to main- taining an effective two-way communication between the people of this province, the government and its agencies. A littie further communication of a local nature. As you know the Enviroamental Assessment Board public hearings regarding the proposed liquid indusl.rial waste treatment plant in Ajax have commenced. My office, and 1 personally, are trying to, monitor Oie hearings as closely as possible, and in s0 doing there may be times over the next while when you callniy riding office for some assistance and there is no an- swer. Please understand the reason and caîl again. Thank you for your cooperation. Uheatre propos ed ministrative committee meeting. "We think it makes a lot of sense. " He said that the operators of the theatre have planned extensive renovations to the interior of the building but will leave the outside "pret- ty much as it is. " The manse which is located to the north of the church will probably be tomn down, Wagner said adding "lIt is not in good shape in- side." Ail four members 0f the comniittee, including Mayor Jim Gartshore said that they would support an ap- plication for a dinner theatre despite a recommendatiori froin the town's planning department that it be turned down until the future of the downtown area is resolved. "lWe cannot recommend Oie random extension 0f the commercial use areas as the potential impacts of the cen- tral business district are unknown," a planning report stated. The matter was referred to the sites and accom- modation committee. It will be discussed with the ar- chitect at the next meeting of the committee. CLOCA staff .praised for littie Storm da mage The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA) watershed recor- ded a, rainfalof ap- proximately 5o millimetres or two inches during the heavy rains that Whitby and Durham Region suffered at Oie end of last week. According to CLOCA chairman, John G. Goodwin, Oie storm produced less rainfaîl than Toronto, Peterborough and Trenton which averaged .60 millimetres or 2 3/8 inches. "This was not a major storm," Goodwin said in a written statement, "but because of frozen ground conditions, normal ground soakage did not occur causing a high rate 0f runoff. "Preliminary calculations show Oie intensity of this storm, which lasted 20 hours, to be only 30 or 40 per cent 0f a regional storm. "Regional Storm con- ditions would last up to 48 hours with two to three times more rainfail. " Goodwin also praised Oie staff of CLOCA for preven- ting any major damage during Oie storm. "6The actions of Oie Con- servation Authority and their floodplain management documented by their floodplain mapping, prevented major devestation," Goodwin said. "'The endevours of the Con- servation Authority to restrict building in the floodplain bas paid off. Damages within this water- shed would appear to be minimal."
