PAG;E 10, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9. 1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS Today is Heritage Day.... ....Our historicial heritoge Centennia Buildling most familar heritage site By EUGENE HENRY This is Whitby's rost faniiliar heritage building. It bas historical significance as the old County Cour- thouse going back to 1853, when the corner stone was laid with great pomp and ceremony to provide the seat of government for On- tario County. It lias architectural merit as well because it u!;. designated by one of ine most prestigious firnis in central Canada in the 1850's - Cumberland and Stormn. Their work includes major sections of Osgoode till in Toronto, Upper C'Ianada College and several COurt houses throughout Ontario. Our old court house was designed in the Gr.eek revival style, with the three storey structure capped with a cupola that can be seen for a great distance. Whitby bas in this structure a first class example of how a fine heritage building can be recycled for a new and viable life. As the Centennial Building it is now home for the Red Cross Society, the Whitby theatre company, the Whit- by Historical Society (Ar- chives) and other service organizations. It is also a meeting place for the Kiwanis and Lions clubs.. in the faîl of 1979 the Cen- tennial Building was designated as a historic site and structure by the town councîl for Whitby under the Ont.ario Heritage Act. It was the- first designation of the Local Architectural Conser- vation Advisory Committee (LACAC) for Whitby.
