WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 1980, PAGE il Sex education is not smister, board says CONT [Y FROM PC. 3 Emm said that the em- phasis should be on other development areas such as sports and recreation. 'II personally, as a family man with young children, arn opposed to the overex- posure of this subjeet in the schools, " he said. On the other side of this potentiaily explosive debate is loyd White, the Durham Board of Education's health and physical educations consultant and the mani who is responsible for the design t of the program. Whte said that the program "bas been ap- proved by the board and will be ready for the sehools in September." He also maintained that the course is discreet and should not endanger any rchild's moral character. " The program meets the requirements of the Minstry of Education," who he said, were responsible for the program being introduc ed ini the first place. White said that the paren- ts and Emm saw only the teachers outline for the part of the course that deals with human sexuality. That outline, he main- tained, did not give all the details of the course and recommended that before making any final decisions the parent should take a look at the course material and references. He also stressed that the concern is only for one part of the course that may only be taugbt for two to three hours a week for only six to eight weeks of the scbool year. The rest of time, the cour- se deals witb other areas in- cludlng dental and personal hygiene and nutrition. White also maintained that'the -emphasis is not on sex. He said that the course was broken up into four sec- tions: students in kindergar- ten to grade 3 would deal with the family; 'grades 4, 5 r and 6 with themselves as in- dividuals; grades 7, 8, 9 and 10 with the problems of adolescence and grades il and 12 with such topies as marrage and old age. V/ite said that he has received no objections to the course from the majority of parents that he bas met with over the past few months. V/hile the Ministry of Education makes it man- datory for the board to offer this course, It is not man- datory for the parents to ailow their children to take "If you as a parent object to the program, you can withdraw your child," he said adding that teachers also have the right to with- draw from teacbing the programn if tbey feel they cannot do so. White aLso said that the teachers who wiil be conduc- By MARION IRV/IN The Kiwanis Club's Ladies Great Ride for Cancer was a whopping success. About 115 people participated in and finished the 20 kilometre ride, the only casualties being two blown out tires. About one third of the riders were men and chidren who had been invited to join the ladies this year. The Ride was officially started by Couriillor Bob Attersley who cut the ribbon and wished the participants a happy ride. And happy it was under beautifully blue skies. Seven of Wtiby's banks and trust compýanies par- ticipated providing at least 35 of the total number of riders. The largest number came from thé Royal Bank who provided 8 participants. Ride fever even caught up to four of the managers who joined in and completed the 20 kilometres. One manager offered the comment that "the Ride bad provided some fun for his staff and had established some rap- port arnong them" Manager Tom Dodge (alias Tom the Dodger) from the Bank of Nova Scotia and Joe Sharpe (alias Joe the Shar- pey) from the Bank of Mon- treal had a grudge ride going. It is not known at the moment who has won the challenge although it is rumnoured that Tom the Dodger may be slightly ting the programi have had extensive training and are qualified to instruct it. The consultant also said that the course outtine that first alerted parents to the program "tends to make it look so much more than it 's.0 "'There is nothing sinister about the program," hie ahead. However, the final result will not be known until ail the money has been tur- ned in. Ail mornes, along wlth the sponsor sheet, are to be tur- ned in to any of the three Toronto-Dominion bank branches. The Kiwanians have set a 3-week limit at the end of which time they will award the i0-speed bike, donated as a prize by LASCO, to the rider who has turned in the most money. If all pfledges are honoured the resuits of this year's Ladies Great Ride could reach $800. So ail riders are urged to get those pledges in as soon as possible. A few riders from both Henry and Anderson Street High Schools participated. The Henry Street group was led by principal Jenny Beal who was most suitably decked out in bike riding gear and who proved to be no slouch at riding a bike. In fact one would think this might be a leisuretime ac- tivity of the lady as she completed the course in ex- cellent time. She was ac- companied by her husband, Colin Beal, both of whom, we understand, rode farther than necessary, as did several others, ail of whom were slightly off course at one point. Most riders completed the course in one'and a haif to two hours although a few hardy pedallers came in just said. "It's straight education. " It's just so hard to say that it is family life education and nothing else. " White says that he would like to have imput about the program from the parents. 'V/e are keenly In- terested in what the parents have to say," he said adding under an hour. V/hile the riders caught their breaths at the finish point and en- joyed donuts and drinks, draws were made for prizes which had been donated by LASCO, Bright Electrie, and T. Wilcox Incorporated. Acknowledgement is made as well to the Pepsi company who donated the drinks and to the many merchants throughout town who put up signs in their businesses to publicize the Ride. Ask any body.
