WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 1980, PAGE 23 Iroquois Park home for sports camps Last summer, the Town of Whitby Parks and Recreation Department in- troduced a tennis camp for children that utilized the facilities at Iroquois Park. The success of that camp led to the decision to expand the tennis program and in- troduce both a baseball and a soccer camp for this sum- mer. The organization of these camps are well under way. The three camps are open for boys and girls of ages 8 - 14. The camps will run Mon- day to Friday for three hours a day with two sessions available, each session involving four weeks. The two available sessions are: (1) Monday, June 30, 1980 to Friday, July 25, 1980 and (2) Monday, July 28, 1980 to Friday, August 22, 1980. The tennis program has been expanded this summer to better accommodate David Condon, chairman of the Durham Regional Ad- visory Committee, wishes to announce the development of a poster competition open to all students of secondary schools in Durham Region. The theme of the com- petition, effective April 18, 1980, is to deliver a preven- tion message on alcohol and/or drug abuse. The committee has established guidelines for the com- petition which indicate that the poster size be ap- proximately two feet by one and one half feet (2' x 12'), the materials used is open to student's discretion, e.g. type of paint, colours, tex- ture, and a restriction that no photographs be used. There are three prizes to be awarded, a first prize cash award of $100 to the winning student plus an award to be presented to the school represented, and lesser cash awards to the second and third prize winners. The winning poster will present the most effective preven- tative or educative message on alcohol and/or drug abuse. Students can submit their posters to their art teachers by the deadline date of Friday, May 30, 1980 or to the District Health Council office in the Whitby Municipal Building, 575 Rossland Road East. The Regional Youth Ad- visory Committee was established recently to give advice and direction to the Durham Region District Health Council's Substance Abuse Committee on how to aid in reducing the problem of alcohol and drug abuse amongst the youth of Durham Region. Through their deliberations and a small opinion survey of the studen- ts of their schools the com- mittee has identified the players of different skill levels. Level I will provide instruction at a beginner level and will run in the mornings between 9:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Level II will involve instruction at an ad- vanced skill level and will run in the afternoon, from 1 - 4:30. Each day, three hours of instruction and a one-half hour free swim will be provided. The courts are in the process of being resur- faced and will be in excellent 513 Perry St. Whitby, Ont. It was noted that very lit- tle education and infor- mation on the effects of alcohol and drug abuse is available to students with in the school system. The committee felt that students should be made aware of all that is involved with drugs and alcohol and therefore would be in a better position to make a decision as to whether they wanted to in- dulge. They are presently seeking the cooperation of their Principals to set up display areas for the provision of information. The membership of the Regional Youth Advisory Committee comprises representation from various secondary schools of Durham Region. The ideal format for membership is representation from all the secondary schools and the committee is currently in the process of informing those schools not represen- WEST LYNDE MEAT & DELICATESSEN 3ws of LDeej i.10m. -M Hinds of Beef 1.99 lb.
