WFI1TBY FREE PRES S, WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 19 ffl, PAGE 5 Free Press exculsive interview.... Daviqs walks in the eye of the hurricane Bill Davis remains ab- solutely calm and cool, totally composed and in total command of both himself and his political career. Some of the candidness and calmness came through in a recent interview with the Free Press. In that one-on-one inter- view, Davis was relaxed, charming, well-informed and in total control of the facts relating to issues that concern ail Ontarians. Davis was surprisingly well informed about the issue that most of us in Whitby and the Durham Region were concerned and in answering questions was refreshingly open and honest. The 50-year old lawyer also expressed his views on provincial and national issues and since the Quebec referendum is so close and he was due to go to that province to promote the federalist cause, that was where the interview started. SOVEREIGNTY- ASSOCIATION: CANADA'S BREAKUP Davis has said, time and time again, that he 15 flot prepared to negotiate sovereigrity - association which he has said is not "ac- ceptable or workable. " He also maintained that no other province is prepared to negotiate the matter either. In a recent speech to the Empire Club of Canada, Davis said, "'Sovereignty- association - the polite termn CONT U ON PG. 8 NEVER WAX YOUR CAR AGAIN Outsîde: PRESERVAtSHIME You11 neyer have ta wax again. Hie bas been instrumental in changing the course of flot only Ontario but of Canada. He Is perhaps the only provincial politician to have truly national power. Since he took office on March 1, 1971, William Grenfeil Davis bas led On- tario through its most dif- ficuit decade ever. Both his admirers and detractors have admired his intelligence, integrity and political genius at leading the Progressive Conser- vative Party through two minority governments. Friend and foes, alike, respect him. In 1971, he won a landslide victory to become the leader of the Ontario Tories and became the fifth consecutive Premier of Ontario, from I that Party . His climb to the top political post was the crowning achievemerit in a political career that began on June il, 1959 when he was eiected the MPP for Peel Riding. in 1962, he was appointed Minister of Education by Premier John Robarts and in that post he was respon- sible for the updating and modernizatiofi of this province's educational system. Davis was responsible for the introduction of what is commonly called the "r;ew math." During the last few mon- ths a virtual storm bas been brewing about the Ontario legisiature. Stuart Smith, leader of the opposition Liberals bas been threatening to throw the government out and force a general election. On top of that, Alberta Premier Peter Loughheed and newly re-elected Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau have been unable to come to terms on an energy pricing agreement, and since Ontar- io is one of that province's biggest customers, Davis has been in the thick of the fight. Next door, Rene Levesque and the Party Quebecois bas been threatening to drastically change, even destroy the Canadian Con- federation on May 20 with the referendum vote.
