Whitby'9s earliest industrial concern By EUGENE HENRY The first travellers in the Whitby area moved on foot or by horseback through dense stands of oak, pine, maple and cedar and in clearing the land for far- ming much of this over- burden of trees had to be chopped down and burned. But even then, the coun- tryside was covered with a _thick and sometimes im- penetrable forest of big cedars and other evergreen growth. The cedar trees were put to good and profitable use by the farmers and settiers of the 185's, for split rails along property lines and as shingles for the export market through Whitby Harbour. THE CORPORATION 0F STHE TOWN OF WHITBY S 1 25TH ANNIVERSARY 1855-1980 PROCLAMATION ST. JOHN AMBULANCE DAYS TAKE NOTICE THAT May 29, 30 and 31, 1980 are hereby proclaimed as "St. John Ambulance Days" in and for the Town of Whitby. ALL citizens are reminded of the f ree emergen- cy first aid services provided by St. John Am- bulance in Canada for over f ifty years. DATED at Whitby, Ontario, this 28th day of May, 1980. J. C. Gartshore, Mayor, Town of Whitby- required a strong back and sure eye with the maul. Making shingles, however, ealled for real skills with the short-handled maul and the draw knife. The C.W. Jefferys drawings that accompany this piece are noteworthy. The shingle-makers serve their purpose as good illustrations only. They show how the tools are used and the way the workmen process the cedar \wod product. The rail-splitter is, however, a dramatic piece of fine art, that not only shows "how to do it", but discloses the nature of the burnt over countryside and the jean, bard look of the set- tier/farmer, toiling to clear his land. These illustrations are so good each in their own way that littie explanatory text is needed. Ruddy exec for 19M0 The J.O.
