PACF 6. WEDNESDAY. MAY 2 K 19 80, WFITBY FREE PRESS Between Youi and Me By RUTHI CHAMBERS F 9 Our man in Holland this past month, Tom Doucette, is a much admired and respected friend of mine. Several months ago I wrote about Tom in Italy during the war but did not men- tion hlmn by name at his request. Tom, a member of the First Canadian Division was sent with eleven other. men as advance scouts of the Royal Canadian Regiment to Amstçrdam in April 1945 as the war lAbout Douecette's return to Holland was nearing its end. This year, Tom was invited to go to Holland from May 1 to May il for the 35th anniversary of the liberation of Amster- dam and the final days of World War Il. He told me about this wonderful experienCe and hils thoughts before he left and while he was there. A very emotional and thought-provoking time for ail concerned and now we can share bis feelings. " «As 1 sit in the Toronto Airport waiting to board the 707 KLM jet that wiil take me to Amsterdam many memories corne to mind. Looking back on those six years of war 1 ask myseif, 'why have I been invited to returu to a city where in May 1945 1 had seen s0 much misery and starvatiori?' A city where there was 50 much starvation that grown men and women wept openly aIt the sight of a can of Spamn or buily beef, two of the arrny's most detestables. A city where the people had to une up each day with ration cards to get a bowl of soup, of sorts. When a member of a family <ied the death was flot reported to the authorities so that extra bowl of soup could help keeP someone from dying of starvation. "From Amsterdam 4,000 people were sent to extermination camps - Auschwitz, Bergen Belsen and Theresieflstadt in the four day period from August 31 to September 4, 1944 to be murdered because they were Jews." '«I ask myseif why the Dutch people would want us to Corne back after thirty five years' They don't owe us anythrng. We were an army of young men and women who were glad the war was over in Europe and to us Holland was a good place to see it end. We were a part of the Allied Army that had fought to liberate them and then it wold be time for us to return to Canada. They would forget us and gratitude is somethîng that normaily fades with time and time passes quickly.
