Ruddy General Hospital reaffirnied iLs opposition to a proposai, that would see the facility used as thje basis for the redevelopment of the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. The board passed a motion at the meeting committing itself to "'make every effort" to keep the hospital as a primary health care facility. Whitby Town Counil's representative on the board, North Ward Coucillor Bob Carson said that they have been in touch with Ontario Minister of Health Dennis Timbreli and have been told thn't he has no intention of changing the hospital's role Timbreil told the Ontariç, Legisiature recently that h . had no intention of changirg Ruddy's role. "The board is trying to play the issue 10w key right now because they have received assurances forrn the minister," Carson said. Since the consultant's report was made public in March, Carson said that let- ters of support have been pouring in from Whitby residents. "They have received about 165 letters fromn residents offereing their support and about 3,000 names on petitions," he said. In their report, the con- sultants dlaim that the hospital is underuseci and expensive. It is also not meeting the need for chronic care in the area, Peat, Marwick and Partners said. Camp places There are stili places available for this summer's Christmas Seal Day Camp at Camp Samac, Oshawa. The facility is offered to children between five and nine years who have asthma or other recurrent respiratory problems, and will operate weekdays bet- ween Monday, July 7 and Friday, July 18.
