O. Ruddy General Hospital last January, a local doctor "could hardly believe lt.'1 Dr. Frederick A.. Cuddy gave that statement in evidence last week in the inquest into the death of Tysen Harvard of Oshawa. Cuddy, who graduated from the University of Toronto's ms. ilcal faculty in 19301. told the Ajax coroner Denis Gabrielle that ab- dominal surgery was being performed by Dr. S. A. Doc- tor of Oshawa on the boy was almost completed when he noticed that his heart had stopped. III was overconfident at that stage," Cuddy testified. "The operation was prac- tically over and everything was ail right. " An anesthetist for the operation, Cuddy told the inquest that he noticed the child did not have a pulse at about 9: 10 a.m. on January B. That was almost 40 minutes after the operation had begun. He also told the inquest that he had checked the child's pulse at about 9 a.m. when he recorded it as 116 beats per minute. At the time of bis death, Tysen was undergoing surgery for an undeseended testicle as well as un- dergoing a procedure to enlarge the opeming of the urinary tract. He was un- dergoing the latter procedure when his heart stopped, the inquest was told. Cuddy told the inquest that he spent five minutes trying to find the child's pulse before telling Doctor that Tysen's heart had stopped beating. At this point, an emergen- cy was called serveral physicians took part in emergency procedures. Cuddy testified that the child's heart b'tat was even- tually resotred after adrenilin was injected direc- tly into bis heart. Tysen was then tran- sferred to the Sick Children's Hospital in Toronto. Cuddy went along in the ambulance. Dr. John Edmunds, staff anesthetist at Sick Children's told the inquest that several tests conducted on the child showed that his brain was dead and at 2 p.m. on Januray 9, after con- sulting with his parents, the decision was made to disconneet the life support system and Tysen died. «'Electroencephalograms (brain test) conducted the following morning (January 9) showed no electrical ac- tivity,".Edmonds said. In further testimony, Cud- dy told the inquest jury that he was licensed to practise medicine in 1932 and opend his practise in Whitby. In 1945, Cuddy said that he had taken a two month cour- se in anesthetics and has been glving anethetics in addition to bis general prac- tise since that time. He said that he did not see the Harvard boy on the night before the surgery, although he did see a couple of other patients, because he believed that the child was coming in the following Cuddy also testified that he received a telephone eall from a nurse at Ruddy Hospital that same night, around 9:30 or 10 p.m. , who wanted to know if he had any orders for pre-operation seditives for the child. According to Whitby Mayor Jim Gartshore, this is the first time that the Whitby Brass Band and the County Town Singers have given a concert together. During the evening, there will also be a Heritage Showcase Display in the lobby of the Municipal Building. Those who plan to attend this concert are advised to bring their own lawn chairs.
