The Catholic Youth Organization thinks they have found a good alter- native to surmner bordom. From now until August 29 the CYO are sponsoring a program called the Whitby Youth Project for kids ages 8-16. The project hired six students fromn manpower to work as councellors for the various activities run at Dennis O'Conor High School, where the camp is being held. This is the first year that such a projeet has been run in Whitby and the response this far has been good ac- cording to Lorraine McKay, projeet supervisor. Each morning during the week the project starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. that nigth. During that time the kids play games and are involved in sports activities, theatre arts and arts and crafts serninars. The WYP is also holding a play to be put on during the County Town Carnival. "Around the World in 80 Days" shahl be put on in various parks arou.nd Whit- by and Oshawa. Although attendance has been good thus far McKay said that the number of kids tends to fluctuate, leaving a core group of around 2.5. "We want as many kids as we can get, " said McKay . She went on to say that many of the kids have to ride their bikes or bus across Whitby to get to Dennis O'Conior so, she feels that they must be doing something right. "Some kids just corne out for the particular program that is of interest to them," said McKay. Every Wednesday the group try to hold a special event, be it swimming, a camp fire or trips. On the last Wednesday of the project they hope to take the kids to Centre Island in Toronto for the day. All 0f the kids at the project participate actively in the events which are held keeping them both busy and happy.
