PAGE 2, WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1980, WHITBY FREE PRESS Conimiettee wants seven per cent pay hike for councilors Members of Durham Regional Council wiil be asked today to approve a management committee recommendation that wiii give them a seven per cent salary increase starting next January 1. Last Wednesday., the committee voted by a 3 to 2 margin to recommend the increase in councillors $12,980 a year salary. Mem- bers of council have not received a pay increase in just over a year. At the last regular of council, the committee withdrew a recommen- dation that, if it had been ac- cepted, would have given the regional chairman a seven per cent increase in salary startlng next January plus a pension and other benefits. However, because the chairman is not an "-em- ployee" of the region he la not elegible for a pension as he is consldered an elected officiai. The regional chairman's present salary is $35,000 a year. The recommendation that goes before a council today also suggests that the chairman receive a seven per cent stipend increase. Casting their ballot in favor of the increase were Whitby Mayor Jim Gar- tshore, chairman of the commîttee, Brock Mayor AI MePhail and Regional Chairman Walter Beath. Vot-ng against the measure were regional councillors Ed Kolodzie and Margaret Shaw, both of Oshawa. The remainlng two rnem- bers of the committee, coun- cillors John McLaughlin and Aland Dewer (both of Oshawa) were absent from the meeting. The recommendation must not only get the ap- proval of the sitting council but also receive the sanction of the next council that will take office after the Novem- ber election. It was buiît by Thomas Denereil a local contractor. Mrs. John Ham Perry, wife of Whitby's founder Peter Perry gave the land for both the church and the little service building to Ail Saints. The church was built in 1865 the parish hall in 1870. The decision to wreck the building came after the parishoners investigated every alternative step that could be taken to reserve the structure. It was ruled unsafe a year ago and a great deal of costiy work would have been necessary to replace the flooring, the heating, system electricai wîring and plumbing to meet 1980 building standards. Its use as a parish facility for educational and charitable pruposes dimished after the new parish hall was built in 1959. Ail Saint's has become a centre town place of worship over the years. Parishoner's cars crowd the streets around the church on Sunday and at tiines when speciai events have been arranged. Caîl for restoration by heritage oriented in- dividuals and groups have flown in the face of Al Saint's realities. It is unfor- tunate that the little building wiil be losi to the com- munity. 1- JULY24-25 ffrEHere's your chance to treat a friend to something special.
