PAGE 12, WEDNESDAi'Y, AUGUST 6, 1980, WHITBY FREE rOur' historical heiritage By YEUGENE HENRY, Whitby's foremost historian J 1 give You Captaln James Cook of the .Rqyal Navy as an Authentic lhero forWhlt- by, because ho peacefully changed. the .map; of our world, more thàn any man in history. We should be mindful 0f the fact that the people of our town acquired Captain Cook navigator,, explorer, and cartographer when we PRES-S W hitby adopts an olId hero LU. chose Whitby as our name in 1848. His home Port of Whitby in Yorkshire, England, wil always be associated with his three great voyages 0f discovery in the Pacifie Ocean, where he discovered and chartered more new land ini a decade, than al other explorers before him. His first voyage in a Whit- by ship the Endeavor, took hlm to Tahiti. he discovered New Zealand and explored the east coast of Australi a. His second expedition took hlm to unexplored areas of Antaretica in search of a southern continent. His third and final voyage was to the northern reaches of the Pacific including par- ts of Canada on the coast of British Columnbia. He was searching for the Pacific end of the north-west passage to China. The ice around Alaska forced him to sail south, into mid-Pacific areas, where he discovered Hawaii and met hls death. He was 50 years of age at the time. Captain Cook played a vital role ini Wolfe's defeat of Montcalm at the battie of the Plains of Abraham and the start of British rule in' Canada. Prime Minster Pitt gave hlm orders to survey the ap- proaches to Quebec on the St.. Lawrence reiver. As a resuit the British ships were able to sali easily, up the river, without pilots, to their destination and a place in history. While doing his maritime survey work for combined operations in Canada, Cap- tain Cook sailed around the waters off Newfoundland and becarne most familiar with the shores of our coun- try there. Cook is therefore closely associated with the start of British rule in Canada and we sho uld therefore know more about hlm. Both the young and old need heroes in their lîves, as an Inspiration for- great en- deavors and quiet pride in the accomplishments of those, who broke harriers to achleve extra ordinary commendable goals for ail. Because values and at- titudes change over time, it is not easy to define a real and lasting hero. As an example,. militar heroes are currently in decline, following the bom- bings of World War Il and the Vietnam war. It is more likely, that heroes like Sir Edmund Hillary, Gandhi, Sweitzer Banting and Pasteur will survive successfully the test of time. As for the great explorers, navigators and map makers, they wiII remain unchallenged as the greatest heroes in the minds and hearts of men for ail time. Nothing can diminish the greatness of Columbus, Magellan, Drake and cook - heroes ahl, forever. It bas been sometime sin- ce I was in a history class. I can flot say therefore, how our teachers deal with heroes as models for the young. I would like to think however, that they are still respected and reverred, with Captain Cook of the Royal Navy being given a very special niche in the Pantheon of Heroes, because of his great en- deavors and because he came from Whitby.
