Whitby Psych advisory' board Consumers of mental health services now have an opportunity to be involved in the direction to be taken by a psychiatric hospital. The Durham Region District Health Council has set up a Planning and Priorities Advisory Commit- tee to advise the *Ontario Government regarding the redevelopment of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital. The committee is examining existing mental health programs, determining mental health needs, and making recommendations as to how those needs can best be met. The role of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital as well as alternatives to in- stitution-based care are being examhined. The committee is conduc- ting a survey of former patients of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital in or- der to obtain a consumer' s perspective on mental health service needs and priorities. The information which is gathered will be kept strictly confidential and will be used to plan future services to' be provided by the hospital. Paul and Stafford Higgins, grandsons of the long-tume publisher, headed the family group that came here to put a memnorial plaque on the building that is now part, of the Royal Hotel and to join with Whitby citizens in celebratinig the talents of William Higgins as an editor, writer and publisher of Whitby's longest lasting newspaper 156-1883. Mayor Jini Gartshore and councillor Barry Evans per- formed their official duties with Mr. Paul Higgins as the plaque was placed on what is undoubtedly one of Whitby's best heritage buildings.
