WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY. AtJGUST 13, 1980, PAGE 3 Parts of contract accepted Worlkers for arbitration over Ipay Firestone workers who lost their jobs three weeks ago bave given their union a mandate to, take the com- pany to arbitration over the issue of severance pay for 164 workers. However, in a meeting held last week, workers of the closed plant voted to ac- cept several minor issues covered by a company offer. The offer accepted by the United Rubber Workers union was basically the same as one offered them one month ago. Clause in the contract concerning the severance pay will be lef t until the arbitration. Successor rights have been given the union should the plant be purchased. Several important parts of Firestone's offer include: -preferential hiring given to Whitby workers at other Firestone plants; -pension rights carried to other company plants as fuVil Davis announces plans Plans to build a $60 million LCBO warehouse and plans for a,$27 million expansion to the Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital were confirmed by Ontario Premier William Davis at a luncheon given by the Whitby Rotary Club last Thursday. Davis told the 250 gathered at the Heyden- shore Pavilion that con- struction on the LOBO warehouse would definately begin in the first part of next year. He also said that work on the hospital expansion would start ' "'very shortly" although no firm date was given. "lWe are getting alot of opinions and advice on this, but 1 want to reiterate as premier, we bave plans very soon to start renovation and rebuilding some parts of the Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital," he said. The health council, who ar preparing a report for the ministry on the mental needs of the area, bave been given until the end of 1980 to complete their findings. The Durham Region District Health Council have hired a consultant who's job it will be to contact mental health workers, former patients and the general public to get an overaîl view of the improvements needed. Must mamntam inves tm ent CONT'D FROM PG. 2 depends on the degree of peoples confidence and en- thusiasrn in the industry. " Davis warned that Canada cannot aff.rd to hide behind "6new tarrifs and protec- tionism". This, he said, would destro) the economic capaeity of the country to serve world markets, thereby destroying its capacity to generate jobs.- "Our responsibility is to maintain a climate where people who want to invest will invest, " said Davis. 0"we want to favour Canadian owned Ontario in- dustry by giving it a fair op- portunity in the world marketplace, not cripple it. The announcement of in- tentions to expand the facility was first announced in 1979, coinciding with the closing of Lake Shore Psychiatric Hospital in Toronto. The LOBO warehouse will be built on the corner of Wentworth street and Boun- dary road. The 305,000 sq. ft. building will provide employment for about 200 people upon its completion in 1983. payments do not corne into effect upon retirement; -benefits extended for six months, with an option to buy continued benefits for an additional 12 months; -seveiance pay instead of deffered pensions for certain employees 44 years of age; -a cash payout to em- ployees with less than five years service. Employees 45 years of age will receive severance payments while those over 55, with at least 20 years service receive immediate pensions. The union has been attem- pting to gain immediate pensions for 164 workers who will not receive thern for at least ten years because of their ages. The 164 workers, aged 45- 55 were eligible for deferred pensions which will not corne into effeet until the employee reaches 65. Instead of fighting for the pension demands th e union are now seeking a severance pay at the rate of four Per cent for each of the workers earnings while at the plant. This would cost Firestone between $5,000 and $8,000 per person. That issue wil be taken to the arbitration after the union files grievenses under the contract. "lWe haven't had any new reports of any outbreaks said MacKay. "Things are beginning to slow down. " The Ontario Vetrenary Association sent out a sur- vey at the beginning of last week to keep on top of any new developments and MacKay said there have been no further reports at this point. The flow of patients into the clinic for vaccines has also began to slow up. "People are reading the news and doing the things they should so it has limited the number of calîs we get. " At present there is one dog at the MacKay Animal Clinie that is under obser- vation having displayed symptoms of parvovirus. Tis 'isolated case' has still to be confirmed as the disease. "We've been getting alot of vomitting and diarrhoe. cases but they haven't ber related to the disease." s.tîd MacKay.
