WI-ITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 2-0, 1980, PAGE 9 Ladas don't figure iii idustry; Wei1 "Premier Bill Davis is wrong in hils suggestion to ban import of the Soviet made Lada cars," says Liberal candidate Norman Wei. The premier made that suggestion in the written text of a speech he gave to the Whitby Rotary Club last Thursday. He accused the Russians of "dumping" their cars on the Canadian market at prices that are below production cost. Media go-kart race Goodyear Canada are sponsoring a Media Challen- ce Go-Kart Race on Satur- day, August 23 at the Family Kartways track on Brock St. north, Whitby. The event wll get under- way at 12 noon and will In- volve different members of the media in the reglon. Go-karts capable of at- taining a top speed of 50 miles per hour wil be used in the race which ls trylng to raise $2,000 to be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Practice sessions will be held Thursday, August 21 and Friday, August 22 at the track. The first place winner of the race will present a donation, by Goodyear, on the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon, August 31 to September 1. In addition a high perfor- mance go-kart will be raf- fled off during the day. Instead of asking the federal government to ban import of Lada, the Conser- vative Government at Queen's Park should be working to help alI those thousands of laid-off auto workers in Ontario including Durham West. Was Davis' suggestion merely a smoke screen to mask his gover- nment's dismal management of Ontario's' economy? Wei asks. The Liberal candidate contends that if the provin- cial governnient has any evidence that the Russians are indeed selling their cars in Ontario at below produc- tion cost, it should present such evidence to the Anti- dumping Tribunal in Ot- tawa. That would be the responsible action to take. Unfortunately, the premier decided to "«voice" it in a written but un- delivered paragraph in his speech to the Whitby Rotary Club, Wei continues. "Is Mr. George Ashe in' favour of his leader's suggestion to ban import of Lada cars? Let hum take a stand on this issue," says Norman Wei, Liberal can- didate in Durham West. Our hi*storical heiritage op By EUGENE HENRY, Whitby's foreînost hiistorian In years gone by, it is possible that the Whitby Chamber of Commerce may have missed some good candidates for the Peter Perry Award because they were either, non-residents of the Whitby area or public servants here. We suggest, that the people of this community, would endor- se a broadening of the award criteria along these lines, if they could be persuaded that such changes would bring forward new and worthy Whitby Builders for the award. Good citizen- ship cannot easily be defined because the concept changes with the times. In the 1850's feeding the poor and providing homes for orphaned young ones, would be higb.on the list for a person who deslred to combine good works and public service. Today however, a good citizen might be one who makes on- going contributions to the cultural life of the community or a corporate officer who stimulates capital investment that provides employment and growth for the local economy. Those who create new jobs or make old ones more secure, will be the good citizens of Whitby in the eighties and it is possible that some of them may not live around here at ail. As for making imaginative, innovative and highly produc- tive public servants now persons, by declaring them ineligible for honours such as the Peter Per.ry award, it is plain and sim- ply wrong. Conventional wisdom in this regard is tritely sum- marized by those who say "isn't that what they are paid for?." Fortunately the town of Whitby has had a new exceptional public servant/good citizens over the years. They should be YOU .30%,/ BAKING? SAVINGS We are hors for your complote baklng needs. Somewhere at Queens Park in Toronto, are one or more senior provincial governiment officials, who are responsible for those important decisions that were made recently, to ex- pand the Psychiatric Hospital on the lake front. Sixty years have passed since the institution opened its doors and started to give employment to substantial numbers of Whitby people. The original decision to build here, brought Whitby into the industrial era of our time. Let us not wait for another 60 years before we honour one or more government officers who have been responsible for 60 years of good citizenship at the hospital on the lake. Then there are those who are said to be associated with both the expansion programn at Lasco Steel and the development of, the north end of Whitby - in Brooklin. While they are waiting on house sales south of Rossland Rd. let's recognize their good citizenship in these contributions to the Town of Whitby. Finally, may 1 suggest to the Chamber that a Peter Perry award does not have to be made every year. Its value and respect in the community, may very well be enhanced by passing a year every now and then. In summation, it is the writer's view, that the Peter Perry awards should be public oriented, the award ceremony should be dignified and simple at the Municipal Building, the Mayor and council should participate and the criteria for candidates should be broadened to include those who may be public ser- vants, non-residents or corporate citizens. i ( 4 b Stained & lacquered Furniture.
