By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff Well folks, here you see your intrepid Whitby Free Press reporter cruising into seventh place (out of a field of eight) in the Goodyear Media Challenge Cup go-kart race that was held last Saturday at Whitby's Family Kartways. Let me tell you, I have never felt so foolish in my entire life, competing in an event for which I have never had any training in a vehicle of which I am totally terrified. However, I didn't feel too badly because while I came in seventh, I did finish the race, unlike my good frlend Glenn Cochrane of CFTO-TV who was an early scratch and, therefore, in last place. The event, jointly sponsored by the tire manufac- turer and the go-kart operation was the first of what they hope to make an annual event, to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. The day raised $1,200 for MD, $500 of which was the donation of Goodyear. The balance of $700 was raised by Family Kartways through admission fees and the selling of raffle tickets for a new Bear Cat Go-Kart. The winner, Dan Proudfoot of the Sunday Sun, will appear on the Canadian version of the Jerry Lewis Telethon on Global Television on Sunday morning (at 1:15 a.m., or so I'm told by the good people at Goodyear) to present the cheques on behalf of the sponsors. There was one thing I was disappointed about, however. While the Ontario media was well represented by such names as Peter Gross of CITY-TV and Jeff Labow of the Globe and Mail, the Whitby Free Press was the only local member of the Fourth Estate at the event from the Region of Durham. Possibly more local participation may have boosted my standing from second last to say maybe fourth or fifth last! Despite this, the race itself was a lot of fun, those who participated (including myseif) enjoyed ourselves while supporting a worthwhile cause. Since I survived this effort, I hope to return to the starting pole next year and see if I can improve my standing to at least sixth place. IIRI Es
