Seven houses in the area had their basements flooded when pumps at the Harbour Street pumnping station backed up due to a blockage in the draining systemn caused by rags in the pipes. "We got home from a camping trip Tuesday mor- ning and found the mess," said Mrs. Nicole Ferland, a Front Street resident. " At 5 a.m. Tuesday mon- ning two ladies that live on the north-east corner of Front and Brock Streets reported the accumulation of 14 inches of sewer water in their basement to the region. Upon arrivai a man fromn the region told Mrs. Mary DeHart that they couidn't pump the water out and that they wouid just have to let it drain out of it's own accord. The problim with the pump was cieared up around 9 a.m. and the water began to drain. DeHart said that they had a similar problem nine years ago. At that time they added two new pumps. "'They've got two mothers but they don't keep proper maintenance on them," said DeHart. "With al of those floods you would think therç would be a man th ere wathcing it ail the time. "I had a side of beef or- dered but I had to cancel it because I don't even have a freezer now. "The region has proposed to install a new sewer system in Port Whitby and this occurance only serves to accentuate that need," Evans said.
