Tbe director of Whitby Community Care, a service for senior citizens, since it began in 1958, Brooks said tbat sbe is running this year partly because of tbe living conditions in the ward, especially for seniors. "Housing conditions are terrible," sbe said. "Tbere are people living in smaii rooms and inhbornes tbat just aren't liveabie. " Another concern of Brooks is tbe increase in taxes, sometbing she says council can't seem to do anytbing about. "It's especially hard on seniors," Brooks said. "Pensions don't go up wben taxes go up." Brooks also said tbat ber decision to run was influen- ced by tbe fact that no one seems to be coming forward to run against tbe incumben- ts.
