The District Heath Coundil recelved a report in June from consultants Peat Mar- wick and Company which recommended major changes in the deilvery of hospital services. Since that time the coundil's executive committee chaired by Ed- wards, from Whitby, has been meeting with each hospital board ,ta dlscuss their response to the report. One recommnendation in the report, that the Dr. J.O. Ruddy Hospital beacome the basis for the redeveloped Whtby. Psychiatric Hospital, bas already been turned down by Ontario Health Minister Dennis Timbreil. The Dr. J.O. Rud- dy Board la currently developlng a couter proposaI for a rehabilitation unit on its second floor ta meet the increased needs for chronic care and rehabiitation in the Oshawa/Whitby area. Other proposais ta close ob- stetrical units la Port Perry, Uxbridge and Bowmanviile are hoing opposed by local residents. $ 5,000 car fire Members of the Whitby Fire Departinent were cailed ta 49 Fuilwood Cres. at 7:30 last Thursday mor- nlng ta put out a blaze that was cansuming a brand-neW 1981 Buick Skylark. The vehicle, belonging to Mldred Burdon, had only 200 kilometers on the odemneter when the fire oc- cured. A fire departifent spokesinan said that the f ire aruted la the car's engine compartment and that the cause la belng investlgated. Damage to Burdon's car his been estlmated at *5,000 "The decision to hold public meetings was made by the council at the request of the hospitals last spring" said Tome Edwards. The first meeting will ho held in Whitby at the Municipal Building on Wednesday, Oc- tohor sth at 7:30 p.m. "lWe bave received a lot of letters fromn local residents speaking agalnst the con- sultants recommendations, but we haven't heard much from the public yet on how they seS their local hospital develop five years down the road," said Edwards . "The meetings are open to anyone interested, " he con- tinued. "The consultant's report is available for review at the hospital and at the local library." 'II hope that we will have a good turnout"' said Edwar- ds. l"It is most important to hear from the people living in each ýcommunity on how they want to see thelr hospital develop" he con- tinued. "We want as much public input as we can get right now to assist us develop our own recommen- dations."
