Directed by D'Arcy Smyth, the play la entitled, "The Innocents". It tells the story of a gover- nesa who takes a job at an Engllsh estate to oversee two precociaus, orphaned children. A motherly cook la also part of the household staff. These four people are flot alone ini the bouse. T1hey are haunted by fears and ghastly, or ia it ghostly, shadows. The governes and the cook are terrified, but the children are possessed by the spirits and welcorne the visitations. As the play progresses, the evilness of the spirits and the innocence of the children becomnes in- separable, and reaches a climas that prompted New York Journal Anierican to label this pl.ay, "completely spell-binding". D'Arcy Srnyth has been involved in theatre in this region since 1953, and has handled juat about every job in theatrical productions, including actig, directing, producing, stage- management, and set con- struction. He recently stage-managed Whitby Theatre Company's produc- tion of "Oh, It's A Lovely War. " Smyth bas a small and very stron.g cast for "The Innocents", which includes, Paul Hundert and Chrisitne MacInally playing the parts of the bedevilled chlldren; These two young people have appeared in previous Theatre Comnpany produc- tions; the rnost recent beig "Anne of Green Gables", and "Anne trnes Four". The housekeeper is played by Mary Volmer, a well- known actresa whose moat recent appearances were in God's Favourite, and Blithe Spirit. Monica Poulter la cast in the role of the governesa. Poulter bas been involved in theatre in London, England and in Canada for many years. Puttion on a ghostly ap- pearance are Claude Martel and Joan Mllburn. "The Innocents" bas the support of a very experlen- ced stage crew: The producer Is Gail Cheyne; stage manager is Joan Mllburn; Ken Godmere la assistant director; llghting technlclans are, Dave Crowe and Scott Johnson.
