GREENAWAY Free Press Staff The Anderson Raiders girl's senior basketball team earned their way into the Lake Ontario Secondary School Association semi- finals by defeating their home town rivals, the Henry Hawks by a score of 68-52 Iast week during quarter- final play. Leady by top scorer Elizabeth Brown, with 34 points, Anderson managed to' dominate the game throughout. "I have always believed that all you need to win is two points," said Raider's coach Erika Cook. "The game was a total team effort." The Raiders earned their way into the playoffs by winning 10 of the il regular season gaines in the L.O.S.S.A. west. Karen Church, 19, Celcelia Ken, 8, Karen Mikula, 4, Trudy Foskett, 2, and Cindy Swain, 1, rounded off the scoring for Anderson. "The team are working very welI together,"* said Cook. The Raiders finished off tied for first place in the west with Pickering and Henry with games won and lost but dropped into second place behind Pickering when the point spread was taken into consideration., At press time it was not known exactly what time the Raiders would meet with Eastdale in the semi-finals on Saturday at Eastdale Collegiate in Oshawa. The winner of that match up will meet the winner of the second semi-final game Saturday night at 9 p.m. at Eastdale for the L.O.S.S.A. and titie and the winner of that match up will move on to the Central Ontario Secondary School Association final to, be held on December 6 at Lakefield Collegiate near Peter- borough. Further quallfylng play continues this weekend at the Whitby Curing Club. -Free Press Photo by Stephen Greenaway After winning a berth into the Sun Life Bonspiel qualifying rounds Charlie Fisher lead his Whitby rink to two victories before being knocked out of the main event by Ed Werenich and his Avonlea rink in the final qualifying game. The Whitby skip struggled through the local Dawn Spiel on November 15 to gain a spot in the Sun Life In- vitational Bonspiel, worth $14,600 in prize money. Fisher, vice-skip AI Gilchrist, second Don Paradine and lead Mike Jeiley defeated London's Rick Allum, 4-2 and Sarnia's Wayne Steski 10-9 in ten ends of play. After beating these two. highly regarded rinks the Whitby crew bast 8-2 to Werenich. Fisher was quick to deny any home ice advantage. "Ail these guys who come here pick up the ice con- ditions quickly," said Fisher. '"TMe calibre of curling at this spiel was good in that respect." The third round defeat dropped Fisher out of the main event and into the fifth- event competition which has a $1,000 top prize. Werenich and Dixie's Les Gareau qualified for the main-event finals to be held on December 6, both taking the three straight games they played last Saturday. On top of Werenich's third round victory against Fisher his rink defeated London Highland's Bian DeRooy 8- 6 and London Ivanhoe's Barry Pa tterson 4-2. Gareau upset former provinicial champion Bob Fedosa's Annandale rink in the final gaine 8-6 as well as taking Fenelon Fall's David NeLson 7-4 and Tam Heather's Bill Creber 7-5. Gareau and Werenich now have a position ainoung the eight rinks that wiII compete in the finals on December 6.
