WIIITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY. )lSCENIBER 3,19~80, PAGE 13 Between You and Me w 13 v RULT Il CO L[t-'S A few ideas and some thoughts to day about Bell Canada, a highly respected company from one end of the world to the other. The "widow's friend" as the Bell is so often called and a "friend" to many others, too. There is sometimes laughter, neyer derisice though, about women and their Bell shares, safe and secure, ever producing and the divldends bring happy, satlsfled amiles to many faces. Co-perative, frlendly, respectful and well spoken staff are synonymous wlth Bell employees. Tis has always been so and much appreciated by the general public. Even though standards have fallen in many cases over the past few years Bell has malntalned it's high standard pretty well. As stated In Bell Canada's annual report, "the basic philosophy of the company remains constant and clear - it provides a service of igh quallty at reasonable prices, con- sistent with fair treatment of our employees and an adequate return to our investors. " To utilize our hurnan, technological and financial resour- ces in Canada and abroad In ways that will contribute to the social and economic progress of our country and it's people. "To develop and put to use newý technologies, delivery systenis and organizational arrangements to ensure the future prosperity of our business." so there it is in a nutshell, a diversified conipany, active in research and development and specialized in com- munications. Bell Canada's own expertise is now recognlzed around the world to the point that it's consulting services are in demand on five continents. With 100Oyears of service to Canadians, Bell Canada is a regulated monopoly wich bas allowed it to operate as a single company in a given ares . We know that Bell Canada la regulated by thé Canadian Radlo-Televlaion and Telecommunications Commission, (CRTC). Regulated monopoly bas made it possible to bulld an in- tergrated system la which designs could be standardized. And a flexible system Iin whlch .new discoveries llke elec- tronlc swltches and fibre options could be mixed compatibly wth equlpment lnstalled flfty years earlier. Most of us are Bell subseribers and many bave been for well over a hall a century. My long distance calls over the years add up to a considerable arnount of money, in fact the Stereo sound yo.i,.wear..around. Bell a "wid ows friend" FP total would be qulte staggering. When Ajax became a toîl free calling area to Toronto many of us hoped Whitby would follow in due course. This has not happened. In the past few years many people have bought homes in Whitby. A great number have moved from Toronto and I found while doing Welcome Wagon that rnany of the newcomers were really upset by their telephone bilils. Young wonicn many with babies and young children felt they were to close to Toronto, their familles and friends but were unable to caîl without paying long distance charges. I feel the same way. I, too, have family there and old friends as my birth place and home for many years was Toronto. Contiguous is the key word. If we contiguous-to Toronto we might be allowed to have free dialing. The word, con- tiguous, means adjoining or adjacent to. Is Ajax contiguous to Toronto? I think not. Maybe this was a mistake on Belis part to let this happen. However, places like Port Credit and Cooksviile have toil free cails to Toronto. Many years ago there were zone calls and 1 thlnk we pald five cents a eaU and maybe at a later date ten cents to oeil from Toronto to places Uike Etobicoke and probably Port Credit. My mind la rather foggy about It ail but I remember well exchanglng cails wlth friends whose husbands were overseas wlth my husband and we payed the amounts happiy to just catch up on recent news. Mmid you we often complained about this five cent caîl and how "huge" our bills were. Change cornes and tis involves companies like Bell. Bell Canada is far thinking and ever ready I should think when it cornes to research and development and their many other projects such as the far north. But will they be ready to allow change in this area? Whitby is trying to encourage industry to come to our town. We must have industry to keep our tax rate down. I'm sure business, commerce and industry would be very supportive of toil free cails to Toronto and tins might make a lot of wi ves happy, and the children as well if they could cal their granidparents. While Bell Canada has appeared to remain inflexible with regard to their exchange area boundaries, local municipalities, and regional governments have seen fit to change their boundaries to accommodate changing populations. Building second floor Oshawa Tel.: 571-3300 NOPROMISES, IUST RESULTS' MONDAY TO FRIDAY Bell Canada that they should est.ablish their bondaries in line with mnunicipal ones; they say they cannot make such a change. Why flot? Nothing stands still therefore flexibility should be the order of the day. The overail cost must be looked at with a view to counter balance. A precedent has been set with Ajax and sub- sequently it appears the rule has been changed. These are my thoughts and I may be wrong, however, 1 think it is time thât serious consideration be given to the changing population situation such as is happening In this area. One consideration which should be given immediate at- tention is the Whltby-Oshawa boundary lune. Thlckson Road east to the townllne is an Oshawa exchange. Why? 1 lived in this area and 1 have had an Oshawa number ever since I fir- st had a phone many years ago. Unti recently my namer was not in the directory as a Whitby nuniber. I asked a~ couple of years ago if this could be changed and it was; I a now listed in both Oshawa and Whtby: This has been verj confusing to people, when they know you live in Whitby and yet you are not part of the Whltby telephone exchange. There -are many facets to this problem. There are doubtedly many people who would not be interested whi e many thousands would gain advantage wlth free dialing o Toronto. I for one and my husband too areceurtaiing our calls to a-, great extend and so are our friends and family in Toronto -because of the higb cost of long distance cails: CONT'D ON PG. 16 .0ZS e. *-& SERV .CE Renal.
