WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3,1980, PAGE 25, Whitby Free Press.. w AT THEMOVIES with Barry Murkar Paul Newman returns to entertain hockey fans Slap Shot, the hockey movie is back again, this time at the Odeon theatre in Oshawa. The' film stars Paul Newman and an assembly of hockey players and minor actors, which ail put together on the ice or in the locker room, make for a very funny movie, although some of the language at times becomes a littie coar- se. Newman said at the time the film was being made, that he had a lot of fun and also a lot of faîls. The film did very well the first time around, and distributors believe that now the hockey season is in full swing, it is time to bring it out again. It is expected to do well the second time out too. The Oshawa Centre Cinema 2 is playing Hot Dogs, starring the infamous Harry Reems as Captain Clean. This name may not mean much to you, but he was one of America's top pornographic stars a few years back. In fact, he was used as the scapegoat when obscenity charges were laid against the people behind the picture Deep Throat, which also starred Linda Lovelace who enjoyed a short-lived kind of fame. It will be interesting to see just how Reems comes through as Captain Clean, head of the vice-squad. Two musicals that made millions just a few years ago, are making a reap- pearance and, many will en- joy seeing. either or both of them a second time. The films are: Sound of Music, the story of the Von Trapp family and their escape from Austria when the Nazis arrived. This one starred Julie- Andrews and Christopher. Plummer. As you remember, it was a Rogers and Hammerstien effort, and a good one. The other movie is Fiddler on the Roof, a musical that won acclaim. with film loyers ail over the world. It has been done live on Broadway, even by high school students, and each time the audience has en- joyed the music and the story no matter who has done it. Watch for them to arrive in this area soon. Fiddler is already in Toron- to. The very controversial German film the Tin Drum is slated to open in Toronto at three film houses on December 19. This is the film that did not open here last summer when the producers would flot give in to four minutes of cutting by the ce.nsoqrboard. the censor board, four minutes were ordered cut before the film wouid be allowed on Ontario screens. The board insisted that some scenes involving child star David Bennet were very of- fensive. Whatever has happened to change ail this is being kept very quiet at the moment by both sides. The film has been showing in the united States for several months without any cuLs. While this doesn't corne under the heading of movies, no doubt some people will be taking their own movies this Saturday when the Santa Claus parade cornes to the town of Whitby. The parade gets under way at 10 a.m. on Giffard Street -then down Cochrane, east on Dundas and then down Brock Street South. The Choir will sing many favorite Christmas selections as well as some classicai pieces that the entire family should enjoy. The group has been rehearsing for this show since mid- September.
