Skate-a-thon By MICHAEL KNELL Free Press Staff When the 1981-82 Durham Regional Cobincil takes of- fice today they will have to deal with one of the biggest "hot potatoes" of the last council. That "bot potatoe" is the decrease in the regional development lot levy and the accompanying 27 per cent (over two years) hike in the user rates for water and sewer. In a 28 to 1 (with one member absent) recorded vote the old council sent the matter the coincil that wilI be sworn in today. However, the referai motion did not stop one councillor from taking political pot shots at the recommendations. Regional Councillor Ed Kolodzie (Oshawa) told council that it was his opinion that the recommen- dations had been put aside until after the recent municipal election. The maverick Oshawa politician said that the entire issue was "«deliberately sup- pressed unt-il after the elec- tion. " The report on the water and sewer rates carne from what is refered to as the tri- committee, composed of the finance, planning and public works committees. Kolodize accused the tri- committee of trying to 4"4rai.lroad the t.hing through. " He said that council should try to "pinpoint who is responsible for it and two of thern are running for regional chairman."' In t.hat statement, Kolod- zie was referring to Regional Councillor John Aker (Oshawa) and Ux- bridge ' Mayor Gary Herrama, respectively chairmen of the finance and public works committees. Both of them have decided to run for the post of regional chairman. While Kolodzie said that he wasn't opposed to referring the matter, other counillors came out and demnanded it. Councillor John DeHart (Oshawa) said that it should be delayed for the new coun- cil and referred to the social services committee of which he is chairman for their in- put. "I have a deep concern about this whole thing," DeHart said adding, "I'd like to see this corne before Stalned & lacquered Furniture. DeHart's viewpoint was joined by retiring Councillor Ken Matheson (Pickering) who told council that it was "rediculous to discuss this today." "It should be done in the new council," he said. Regional Council decided that the matter should be discussed in a special meeting of council to be called by the new chairman. That meeting will probably be held on December 17. -l 5d Stained & Laquered Furniture. Finishod bookcase trame, complote with 14 yoar tep seam mattrosses.
