WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1980, PAGE 23 SPORTS Blades to host first Trilium Tournament By S. GREENAWAY The Trilium Tournament, the second biggest girl's hockey tournament in the area, will be played at Iroquois Park Arena and the Brooklin Memorial Arena Friday, December 12 through Sunday, December 14. "We are going to see some very good hockey because we have got ten "A" teams, 12 "B" teams and ten "C" teams," said Ruth Pitre the coach of the Blades and along with son Colin, the primve movers of the tour- nament. Along with the home town girls 15 teams from Toronto, two teams from London, On- tario, and teams from Ot- tawa, Hamilton, a Kingston, Montreal and a team from Dearborne, Michigan and eight other teams will com- pete in the three day event. All games will be played by Canadian Ameteur Hockey Association rules wth three regular periods and one five minute ovetime period, if necessary. "People are really going to be surprised by the high calibre hockey," said Pitre. "Most people don't believe that girls can play as good as they can." Each team are guaran- teed two games with the winners of those games ad- vancing to a round robin series. The two top winners of the round robing series will play for finals. The teams will be divided up into "A", "B", and "C" categories with a champion- ship and consolation cham- pionship game being played for each. "The two has done everything we have asked them to in preparation for this tournament" said Pitre. The Trilium will get under way at 7 p.m. on Friday night when the Blades play the Downsview Ladies team at Iroquois Park. The winner of that match up will play at 2 p.m. the next day while the loser will paly at 1 p.m. Both games will be held at Iroquois Park Arena. "If the team plays as well as, they have been playing the last few games they could go far in the tour- nament," said Pitre. "They are a tournament and playoff type team. When the pressure is on they get good." No sooner than they finish hosting the Trilium the Blades will be off to defend their title at the Kingsville Christmas Bells Tour- nament December 26-28. Finals will start at 4 p.m. at Iroquois Park on Sunday. Admission to the tour- nament is $2.50. Refreshments will be ser- ved in the Whitby Hall at Iroquois Park of the tour- naments entirity. The tournament drew 100 players representing ten schools. Boys singles and doubles and girl's singles and doubles competitions were played. -Free Press Staff Photo By RIMAS MIECIUS Special to the Free Press Ken Buchan broke a per- sonal jinx Saturday, but left another one in tact. The 30-year-old London skip ended a 12-year struggle to win the main event in the $14,600 Sun Life Invitational bonspiel by beating Bill Greenwood of Mississauga 6-2 in the final game at Whitby Curling Club. "If you're stubbron enough you can win it," smiled the London physical education teacher. "It's been a large jinx for me -- I've never made it past the Badminton tourney The McLaughlin Trojans girl's and the O'Neill Red- men boys dominated last weekend's Henry Street High School Under 16 In- vitational Badminton Tour- nament in both the singles and the doubles events. ' Jane Dutly (M.C.V.I.) won the girls singles event while she and team mate Marey Sharp clinched the girl's doubles title. Andrew McCaroll (O.C.V.I.) was the boy's singles winner. McCarroll later teamed up with Bill Lloyd to win the boy's doubles trophy. The best Henry showing came from Ian Magrath and Les Sinden who were the boy's doulbes consolation winners. The tournament was designed to give players ex- perience in competition. The tournament drew 100 players from 10 high schools in the LOSSA region. Say uncle! Now what do I do with him? Two wrestlers battle it out on the mats while a crowd of spectators cheer them on. • The pair were part of a cóntingent of boys from several high schools in and around Durham Region that competed in a LOSSA wrestling competition held at Henry Street High School last week. Results of the tournament were not avaiJable at press time. -Free Press Photo by Stephen Greenaway quarterfinals. Another hex that has hovered over the 64 rinks that have competed in this prestigious spiel still remains. No skip in the fiteen year history of the event has won it twice. Buchan will have to wait un- til next season to crack that one. For Buchan the victory meant $4,000 in hard-earned loot, the most he's ever won ever though the Londoner competed in ten provincial finals and advanced to three Briers as either a vice or skip. Greenwood, a 41-year-old golf 'professional, was a vic- tim of inexperience and physical fatigue as well as Buchan's aggressive tactis. "I just had cobwebs and couldn't shake them," he said the Mississauga skip who had only' begun to curl. competitively last season. "Six games in two days was too much for me. We've never done that before." The Bramalea resident had hoped that a strong showing in the Sun Life would dispell thoughts that his Division Eight win last year in the Ontario men's playdowns for the Labatt Tankard was a fluke. With Ed Werenich of Avonlea, Dixie's Les Gareau and Barry Goring of Bayview among others, relegated to lesser events by defeats at the hands of Greenwood this may now be a bit more self-evident. To reach the final Mississauga shaded Werenich, a Brier curler with three of Paul Savage's Ontario rinks, 8-7 in the semi-finals after dropping Gareau 7-4 earlier on Satur- day. Buchan had an easier route as he bounced Dave Velanoff of Ingersoll 8-2 in seven ends and beat Ron Wills of Dundas Granite 7-4. Will was third on Bob Charlesbois' rink that won the Sun Life last year. Charlebois, with an entirely new front three, was CONT'D ON PG. 24 Girl's hockey Puck, puck, who's got the puck? It didn't go in this time but the Whitby Blade's girl's hockey team managed to put seven past the Mississauga goalie on route to a 7-2 victory. The win increased the Blade's current steak to three games going into the clubs' Trilium Tournament this weekend. Captain Lois Pitre lead the day for the Blade's with two goals and three assists while team mate Marg Fraser picked up a hat trick. Fiona Skurjat and Cathy Lehman scored the other Blade's markers. -Free Press Photo by Stephen Greenaway London rink Sun Life winners
