- Earle Jacob "Jake" Bryant (1914-1973) was born in Ashburn, Ontario in 1914, and was proficient in boxing, baseball, rugby and hockey in his youth. During the Second World War he was an Acting Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax and Londonderry, Ireland, 1942-46. He was a Whitby Public Utility Commissioner from 1951-1971, serving as chairman in 1954-56, 1963, and 1970-71. In 1963, he was president of the Eastern Ontario Municipal Electric Association, after serving four years as Director, starting in 1955. In 1952 he was president of the Whitby Minor Hockey Association, and in later years was ice maker at the Whitby Curling Club. He was a self-employed electrician for 16 years in Whitby. Mr. Bryant was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 112, the Whitby Kinsmen Club and the Whitby Curling Club. He died in Whitby on February 26, 1973 and is buried in Burns' Presbyterian Cemetery, Ashburn.
