- Notes
- Arthur Lynde (1887-1952) was a gifted musician and supervisor of music in Whitby public schools for a number of years and was choir leader of both the Presbyterian and United Church choirs at various times. His hobby was the growing of delphinium and he was a recognized authority on that variety and often was a judge at flower shows.
Arthur Lynde is related to Jabez Lynde (1773-1856), one of Whitby's earliest settlers. Jabez Lynde settled on Hwy. 2 at Lynde Creek in 1804. When the War of 1812 broke out Jabez Lynde volunteered for the government to store goods, run dispatches and provide lodging for British soldiers at his log cabin which also served as a tavern. With the gold he was paid to supply the troops during the War of 1812, Jabez Lynde built the finest house between York and Kingston which is now the oldest building standing in Whitby. In 1986 the Lynde house was moved from Lynde Creek to Cullen Gardens. - Inscriptions
