- Notes
- The portrait on the left is of William Laing. William Laing was born at Morayshire, Scotland in 1819 and came to Whitby with his brother James in 1841. He was one of the town's leading business men and grain dealers in the 1850s and 1860s. He was Reeve of Whitby in 1855 and Mayor in 1863-1864. From 1874 to 1880 he was Treasurer of Ontario County and then moved to Toronto where he died on December 4, 1891. He is buried in Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
The portrait on the right is a black and white portrait painting of Mrs. William Laing (Louisa Amelia Yarnold). Louisa Amelia Yarnold was born at Finchley, Middlesex, England in March 1820 and came to Canada about 1835. On March 20, 1847 she was married to William Laing, Whitby's leading grain merchant. From 1860 to 1864 she lived at Inverlynn, a large house on Raglan Street, Whitby. On September 19, 1864 she gave birth to twin sons and she and one of the sons died that day at Whitby. Mrs. Laing is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
The clock was made in the Canada Clock Factory that was located on the southeast corner of Brock and Colborne Streets. The factory was the first clock factory in Canada. Originally owned and operated by the Collin brothers, (William F., John F. and Edward) in 1872, the Canada Clock Factory operated in Whitby until 1876 when the equipment was sold to a new clock company in Hamilton, Ontario, the Hamilton Clock Company (Varkaris, Jane et al., The Canada and Hamilton Clock Companies. Erin: The Boston Mills Press, 1986).
