Notes
Robert James Catton was born at Scarborough, Ontario, on 28 October 1918 and operated a shop in Scarborough before he came to Whitby in 1959 and purchased Butt Radio and Electronics. He retired in 1995, a few years after taking his son Chris Catton on as a partner and changed the name of the business to C & C Sound. Until 1976 he sold stereo equipment and appliances at 118 Brock Street South. After 1976 he dealt exclusively in stereo equipment. Mr. Catton was a member of the Committee of Adjustment, the Chamber of Commerce, and Retail Merchant's Association. He started the committee which established a Business Improvement Area Board for downtown Whitby in the 1980s. He was also a warden at All Saints' Anglican Church. He was president of the Whitby Rotary Club in 1971-72 and named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1983. In 1979-80 he was Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Dr. J.O. Ruddy General Hospital. Mr. Catton died at Ajax-Pickering General Hospital on May 31, 2002 and was cremated.
