- A colour sketch called Moonlight Night in Jamaica by Florence McGillivray.
- Notes
- Florence Helena McGillivray was born at Burnside Farm, 3rd Concession, Whitby Township, on March 1, 1864. In 1870 her family moved to "Inverlynn" house in Whitby.
Miss McGillivray won two first prizes at the Bowmanville fair for water-color painting in 1881. She studied art at the Central Ontario School of Art and the Toronto Art School.
In the 1900s she was an art teacher at the Ontario Ladies' College, Whitby, and an art critic at Pickering College in Pickering Village until it burned down in 1905.
She studied art in Paris, France, in 1913.
Two of her paintings were purchased by the National Gallery of Canada in 1914. When the First World War began in 1914 she moved to Ottawa but traveled extensively in Canada and the West Indies.
She was elected a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Society of Women Painters and Sculptors of New York in 1917.
In 1925 she became as associate of the Royal Canadian Academy and a member of the Canadian Water Colour Painters Society.
She retired to Toronto in the 1930s and was involved in the founding of a pioneer museum at the Guild of All Arts in Scarborough.
Florence Helena McGillivray died at Toronto on May 7, 1938 and is buried at Union Cemetery, Oshawa.
