By Sue Pitchforth Group 74's & Ashburn Arts Circle Summer Artfest In this month's article, I would like to highlight our upcoming Summer Artfest on Saturday, July 16th in downtown Brook- lin's Grass Park and area. Brooklin Beat: Summer Brings Art & Flowers on July 16 Group 74, along with the Ashburn Arts Circle, and with assistance from the Town of Whitby, are pleased to host the fifth annual event! Please join us as we celebrate this milestone of showcasing local art, dance, music, poetry, and everything creative! This is always such an amazing day on which people gather to celebrate the arts and culture of our area. Local artisans, a juried art show, delicious foods, lots of interactive activities for the children, and live local talent round out the day. New this year, we are introducing a historical component to our event featuring Vintage Whitby's Wade Szilagyi, who will be showcasing many interesting artifacts that he has found in the Brooklin area. He also has a new interactive display called "Talking Ancestors" that bring photos to life - pretty incredible! Hot off the Press! New and updated Self Guided Walking Tours of the downtown will be available to pick up at the Group 74 booth. Please drop by and enjoy this walk back in time. We invite you to visit our Facebook page where you can learn more about what is happening during Artfest: www.facebook.com/Group74/?fref=ts. Whitby In Bloom Garden Tour Group 74 is pleased to help promote the Whitby In Bloom garden tour, being held on July 16, the same day as Summer Artfest. There are some local Brooklin gardens featured, so why not drop by the Artfest and then visit a few gardens? Whitby In Bloom is a civic beautification program that promotes environmental responsibility and civic pride. Whitby In Bloom is based on the international Communities in Bloom (CiB) program. The WIB program's success is largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of community volunteers and the participation of Whitby residents. Visit one or all of the properties that will be on the 2016 WIB Garden Tour. Tour sites will be in Whitby and Brooklin, with each garden varying in size, structure and plant material. In lieu of a fee, non perishable food items will be collected for local food banks. Drop off your donation at one of the tour sites. For more details about the tour please visit: www.whitby.ca/en/residents/whitbyinbloom.asp. Hope to see you and your family out and about these two great community-driven events. Until next time, Sue Pitchforth Editor's Note: We are pleased to publish "Brooklin Beat", a column by Sue Pitchforth, an active volunteer in many community groups in Brooklin and the surrounding community. Local Lacrosse Players Receive Scholarships from Belmont Abbey Ben Utrosa from Brooklin and Kyle Curtis from Whitby have played lacrosse together for the better part of 14 years. They have helped their Whitby Minor lacrosse teams win many field and box lacrosse titles over the years and hope they can take that winning attitude to Belmont Abbey in North Carolina. Kyle and Ben have both received field lacrosse scholarships from Belmont Abbey College. They will head down to Belmont in August with the lacrosse season starting in February. Utrosa, a six-foot-three, 195-pound mid-fielder, says they both can't wait to take their skills to Belmont and help them bring home a championship. "I'm very lucky to call Belmont my home for the next four years, but it will be extra special knowing Kyle will be studying and playing with me," said Utrosa. "It's a small school that has everything I could ever want at a college. Coach Barrett is fantastic, and I can't wait to play for him and his staff." he added. For his part, Coach Chris Barrett is also happy about the impending arrival of Ben and Kyle. "We are extremely excited to add these two high-quality student athletes to our program this upcoming fall," he said. "I believe both Ben and Kyle will make a positive impact on and off the field upon their arrival at Belmont Abbey. We feel like Ben and Kyle are two student athletes that possess the academic integrity and the lacrosse ability that we are looking for here at Belmont Abbey College." With both young men growing up in different parts of Whitby, lacrosse is what brought them together as friends. "I'm really looking forward to Belmont, and it's going to be fun playing alongside Ben after playing with him since Tyke," said Curtis, a six-foot, 198 attack now, playing Jr. B with the Clarington Green Gaels. "We've been together at tournaments all across Ontario and the US, but this will be the best yet," he added.
