8 Friday, October 12, 2018 brooklintowncrier.com Durham Celebrates Waste Reduction Week The Regional Municipality of Durham is recognizing Waste Reduction Week from October 15 to 21, with an official proclamation on behalf of Regional Council. "While Durham Region residents are already practicing waste reduction through curbside waste collection, the best way to reduce waste is for residents to limit the amount they generate to begin with" said Susan Siopis, Commissioner of Works for The Regional Municipality of Durham. "That's why we're joining municipalities across Canada in celebrating Waste Reduction Week. We want to educate, engage and empower Canadians to reduce waste. "Food waste is one of our main focuses this year. Simple tips to re- duce food waste include freezing food for later consumption, repurposing leftovers for other meals, and being more conscious of the amount of food you purchase every week so that you waste less." In celebration of Waste Reduction Week, residents are invited to view a series of educational displays that are set up at Durham Regional Headquarters from October 15 to 19. On October 13, residents can drop off reusable items free of charge from 8 a.m. to noon at the Pickering Recreation Complex for Reuse Day or to drop off their electronic and household hazardous waste.
