6 Friday, February 21, 2020 brooklintowncrier.com North Ward Councillor - By Steve Lee Expanding The Tech Sector The growing tech sector in Whitby (as well as Brooklin) has always interested me. Perhaps it's because I like to keep up with new technology, or perhaps it's because I've always had the idea that this could be a great thing for our town, creating high paying jobs right where we need them. Either way, it is something I am passionate about. I've said all along since the election that a key focus for me is to look to the tech sector to see what we can encourage and develop in Whitby. Cyber security, for instance, is one interesting area. It's ever-changing and growing rapidly as new threats emerge and more companies look to have data online. I believe we have a wonderful opportunity to be a major tech hub. Cyber Games I was recently fortunate enough to be invited to an amazing event, The World Cyber Olympics held a few months ago. Its organizer personally invited me so I could see what it was all about and the companies involved. Taking place here in Durham Region, the event included some of the best companies as well as the best hackers, programmers, and security experts from around the world who were all involved in the amazing competition. What made it that much moreI interesting was that, as this sector grows, these kinds of companies will be able to provide jobs that we need here in town. Which brings me to just last week. I was again invited to another wonderful event on cyber security and technology in Durham Region. It was the opening of Durham College's new Centre for Cyber Security Innovation. The Centre will assist companies by providing them with the talent and staff they seek and need. It's a huge opportunity and it's next door to us. AI Hub The College has also recently opened an AI (Artificial Intelligence) hub which is a leader in applied research, education and innovations for small and medium business. The Centre for Cyber Security will expand on the hub's success and respond to the ever-changing and growing industry of threats and cyber security. While we already have great tech sector companies here in Whitby, we still need to continue to develop it and encourage growth in these high paying jobs. The Centre and AI hub will play large roles in make this happen. I met with many industry leaders in this area, which proved to be exciting. As a result,I look forward to pushing this further for Whitby and working with our Economic Development staff to grow the tech sector and cyber security jobs here in Whitby.
