When: Five more red light cameras were activated as October 30. Where: New Locations Highway 2 at Courtice Road, Clarington Stevenson Road North at King Street West, Oshawa Simcoe Street North at Rossland Road W., Oshawa Ritson Road North at Bond Street East, Oshawa Liverpool Road at Bayly Street, Pickering Other Active Locations Westney Road North at Delaney Drive, Ajax Simcoe Street North at Conlin Road, Oshawa Thickson Road at Dundas Street E., Whitby Coming Soon Salem Road at Bayly Street East, Ajax Taunton Road East at Lake Ridge Road, Whitby Taunton Road East at Altona Road, Pickering Why: Red light running has the potential to cause serious injury or death for both the offending driver and innocent victims. The Region's collision records database shows 534 collisions over a three-and-a-half-year period at signalized intersections where the cause was specifically attributed to a driver disobeying traffic control indications. Many of these collisions resulted in significant injuries and sometimes death. The Region of Durham is one of many municipalities across Ontario using red light cameras to create safer roads.
