Friday, December 4, 2020 3 Brooklin Town Crier Best Centre Receiving Gov't Fund The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre (Best Centre) announced that it is the recipient of $87,770 funded in part by the Government of Canada's Enabling Accessibility Fund. The grant will contribute to the centre's expansion plans by installing a new ramp and new entry door as well as renovating the existing hallway and washroom to allow for full accessibility. "We are thrilled the Federal government is contributing to our expansion with support to making the Best Centre fully accessible," said Lorrie Hagen, Executive Director at The Charles H. Best Centre. "We expect that the Best Centre will nearly double its patient demand in the next 5 years. This grant is one step further in our plan to expand." The Best Centre is in the early planning stages of a $5M Building on the Best campaign to expand and renovate its facilities. Without the life-saving care delivered by The Best Centre, type 1 diabetes patients would unnecessarily present with health complications to overburdened health system partners in the community. The Best Centre's mission is to keep children, youth and adults living with type 1 diabetes healthy until a cure is found. The healthcare educators provide an all-encompassing and lifelong approach driven by their vision and values. "We are committed to treating all people in a way that allows them to maintain their dignity and independence," said Serge Babin, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre. "The grant and our Campaign ensure that our services and programs are accessible to all patients, staff, and volunteers, including those with disabilities." About the Enabling Accessibility Fund The Enabling Accessibility Fund (EAF) provides funding for projects to make Canadian communities and workplaces more accessible for persons with disabilities. EAF aims to create more opportunities for persons with disabilities to take part in community activities, programs, and services, or to access employment. About The Charles H. Best Diabetes Centre The Best Centre delivers one-of- a-kind patient-centred healthcare exclusive to type 1 diabetes. As Canada's only stand-alone centre and charitable organization specializing in type 1 diabetes, the staff provides highly responsive and individualized care. The interdisciplinary clinical team includes registered nurses, dietitians and social workers who provide frontline healthcare and education throughout patients' lifetime. Walter Campbell noticed the beauty of the house on the corner of Baldwin St. and Colston Ave., known to Brooklinites as the Carnwith Mansion. Observing that the building fit in with his Victorian architecture theme, he was thus inspired to paint it. All 850 signed and numbered limited edition prints from his "Winter in the Country" theme were nearly sold out at the wholesale level before it was printed. Built in 1859 for Stephen Mead Thomas, the 14-room brick house was previously owned by a series of 10 families before James and Wilma Carnwith bought it in 1948 and moved in with their four children. The 25-acre property boasted a stable, a three-car garage, a five-room bungalow for staff, three acres of apple orchard, a smoke house, an apple barn, a wooden pergola and a stream that was damned for swimming. A by-law was passed on May 14, 1984, authorizing its Heritage designation because of its architectural and historical value. Then in 1989, the building was purchased and renovated by the Renascent Fellowship Foundation Inc., and today is the Paul J. Sullivan rehab centre for men. Brooklin Heritage Society The Carnwith Mansion By Jennifer Hudgins About "Winter Outing" Sunderland artist Walter Campbell's painting of the historic Stephen Mead Thomas house was chosen by Heritage Canada to decorate its 1987 Christmas gift catalogue. Permission has been granted to use the print by Walter Campbell. (artofwaltercampbell.com) Four Brooklin students have won Whitby Youth Awards. Whitby Celebrates Youth Awards BHS Needs Event Sponsors Brooklin High School's Business Leadership class has a long-standing relationship with the Canadian Cancer Society and Relay for Life. This term, the class is committed to raising money for the Relay by holding a drive-through festival of light event. It will run from 5:20-10:00 p.m., December 14 - 17, at Brooklin High School. The class is seeking help to sponsor the event. There are three ways you could get involved. Event Sponsorship Money or resources donated will help us create our event. We have lights, equipment and resources that we need to purchase to run our event. Sponsors of our event will be recognized in our communication with participants in our emails and through signage at our event. Help in this way is greatly needed as we are starting this event from scratch. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Cheques should be made out toBrooklin High School. Cause Donation A donation made directly to our cause would greatly benefit the Canadian Cancer Society. The pandemic has cancelled all official Relay for Life events and made fundraising difficult. Cheques should be made out to the Canadian Cancer Society. Equipment Purchase or Donation If you have or would be willing to purchase and donate outdoor lights, spotlights, extension cords and holiday decorations, we would gladly accept donations. A drop box for donations is at the school entrance. The class is looking forward to a fun and positive way to make a difference during the pandemic. If you have questions or require additional information, contact the class through email to student co-chairs Riley Campbell and Hannah Bockhop at businessleadershipbhs@gmail. com or teacher Sue Shoemaker at susan.shoemaker@ddsb.ca.
