"I wanted to do some kind of business during Covid-19. So I came across how to make chunky blankets. And then I started selling the blankets. I love making blankets that make people happy." Her biggest challenge is making custom blankets for people who want something special. In the future, she sees herself always making these blankets. For kids, often that money is from an allowance or a birthday gift. But for these kids it was earned by running their own businesses. These incredible savvy business owners are not only learning valuable life skills, but also helping their community. (Part 1 of 2) Sugar Twinz Bakery Paige, Taylor, and Claire, ages 17, 14, and 12 respectively, are the Sugar Twinz Bakery which bakes traditional Scottish shortbread from a beloved family recipe from their grandmother. They donate a portion of the proceeds to SickKids. "We love that we can share our love for baking while also supporting a great organization," Taylor says. So far, they've donated over $2,200. Paige started the business in 2014. It began with the desire to support a charity and a love for baking. She hired her sister Taylor in 2016 to help grow the business. A year later, Claire joined as well. The pandemic was a problem in that sales were down dramatically and locations where they sold were not open. Trying to get supplies when everyone started learning how to bake during quarantine was also difficult. Plus, the cost of products rose. "Learning how to work with siblings in a business setting can be challenging at times," says Paige. The girls believe that the experience of running a business will help in their future careers. Paige wants to become a paediatric doctor. Taylor, who runs the business, has learned how to be responsible while Claire has learned about packaging and baking. Contact: Sugartwinzbakery@gmail.com
