Performers with the Ana-Maria's Dance Academy took part in the Toronto Santa Claus Parade, which was again virtual this year because of the pandemic, along with shows at the Toronto Kids Fashion Week. They also danced on the York Durham Heritage Railroad until it was closed on Sunday, Dec. 19 because of the Omicron virus surge. It doesn't stop there, as dancers will be opening for the Harlem Globetrotters in March at the Tribute Communities Centre. Ana-Maria Theofilopoulos, the owner of the academy, said her dancers were performing as elves on the railroad line, where they tap danced and hand out hot chocolate and cookies. "The girls love performing. Community events have always been big for our studio," Theofilopoulos said. Dancers also took part in the Toronto Kids Fashion Week on Dec. 4. There were three shows and each was sold out, she said. "That was exciting, very modern" with the girls dressed as astronauts. There were three girls all from Whitby who performed -- Jasmine-Maria Collins, 13, Madison Andrews, 15, and Jenna Wild, 16. Dancers also took part in the Toronto Santa Claus Parade. The dancers were filmed at Canada's Wonderland and the parade was shown on CTV. They performed with a Filipino Marching Band and Kinetics baton twirlers. The performers had to be stationary, she said. Theofilopoulos also had to dance or she wouldn't have been allowed in due to pandemic protocols. "We were very similar to the Rockettes. We had our red sweaters, white gloves. One of our parents knitted us all little headbands. We were really creative," Theofilopoulos said. They had to remain six feet apart. "That was super exciting as well," she said. "It was so much fun, so much fun." Dancers will open for the Harlem Globetrotters when they perform in Oshawa in March. This will be the fifth time they've danced at a Globetrotters event. For the event, there will be about 30 dancers, from six to 19 years old. WHITBY DANCERS KEPT BUSY OVER HOLIDAYS NEWS Members of Ana-Marie's Dance Academy in Whitby took part in the Toronto Santa Claus Parade. Held at Canada's Wonderland, the parade was again virtual due to the pandemic. It's one of several events members of the academy have taken part in recently. Ana-Maria Theofilopoulos photo
