The Oshawa Generals took care of business in the trade market last week, well before the deadline, picking up top forward Oskar Olausson from the Barrie Colts and tough winger Cameron Butler from the Niagara IceDogs. The cost wasn't cheap. To pry the Swedish sensation from Barrie, who has 25 points in just 22 games, the Generals had to give up four draft picks plus German forward Kevin Niedenz to free up the import space needed for Olausson, a first-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche in the 2021 NHL draft. The price for Butler, acquired a week ago Tuesday, was two draft picks. The Generals made a more minor deal at the deadline Monday, sending grinding forward Daniel Michaud, who had four goals and seven assists for 11 points in 27 games this season, to Niagara for a pair of draft choices in return. In all, Oshawa general manager Roger Hunt was a busy man this season, making eight trades. In the end, he brought in a pair of defencemen -- Matthew Hill and Thomas Stewart -- and added import de- fender Nikita Parfenyuk. But, he made the biggest alterations up front. A lot of change occurred in the forward ranks with a blockbuster of sorts taking place before the season even started when 2020 first-rounder Aidan Castle was sent to the IceDogs for four draft choices. Castle never played a game for the Generals. He also sent overage forward Tye McSorley to the London Knights for a draft pick. Meanwhile hulking, speedy winger Stuart Rolofs came back a week later from London for a pair of draft choices. Since then, forwards Olausson and Butler have been added and Michaud and Niedenz have been subtracted. A bevy of picks went from Oshawa to other teams and back to the Generals again. In the end, all the moves ended up costing the Generals just two draft choices and seemingly has made the team deeper and stronger, especially up front. The GM never did tinker with or touch the goaltending, insisting from the start he was happy with the three netminders he had -- overager Zach Paputsakis, who spent a considerable amount of time out with a lower body injury this fall -- plus Patrick Leaver and youngster Carter Bickle. On the ice, the Generals came out ready to play Sunday before an empty home stadium, beating the Sudbury Wolves 5-2. Captain Ty Tullio scored twice and added an assist to bring his teamleading points tally to 41 on the season. Butler, in his second game as a General, had an assist. Also scoring were Brett Harrison with his 16th, David Jesus, and Ryan Gagnier, short-handed. The Generals were scheduled to play Tuesday night at home to Kingston (a game already rescheduled) but that game has been postponed. Instead, they'll face the revamped Hamilton Bulldogs later this week, who pulled off the biggest trade of the year so far when they got top gun Mason McTavish from the Peterborough Petes for six draft choices and two players. They also picked up top defenceman Arber Xhekaj for five picks and a player, so Hamilton is clearly going for it. Also looming for the Generals are the conference-leading Mississauga Steelheads, who they'll face this coming weekend. The Steelheads have played great hockey this season backed by excellent goaltending and some all-around superb team play. The Generals, who didn't have him on Sunday, hope to have Olausson in the lineup by this coming weekend.
